Is it possible to have virtual 7.1 surround sound on my 9550 like I do with my Xonar sound card on my desktop?

Download Razer surround software. It's pretty much the only software-based way to do what you want.

The other way to do it is to buy USB surround headphones. They pretty much do exactly the same thing.... Except they have the equivalent of Razer surround baked into the headset, instead of a separate software install.

Thank you. That is a great idea. I had forgotten about Razer Surround.
