Does anyone know what make RAM is used in the XPS 9550.
Has anyone upgraded to 32 GB? If so how easy was it?
Also which RAM kit to buy? Samsung, Crucial, Corsair, G.Skill or something else.
Much appreciated.

Got my 32Gigs from Crucial today for my Precision 5510 (got the set for the 9550) can tell you later tonight

Mine used Samsung ram.
Someone in another forums I linked to, used xmp 2400 Kingston ram, and the XPS15 managed to run at 2400 automatically. Maybe if you are hardcore, could try to put in 2800 xmp ram and see whether it can run at that speeds -
That is good to know. Since the Samsung kit is available on Amazon.
The Verge was also reporting the Dell will be releasing the 32GB model on Feb 2. Any truth to that? -

I got the 32 GB package from Crucial for around $300 + about a month ago - it was literally a "snap" to install - they snap in and out. On reboot computer recognized new memory installed and then I put it thru some heavy memory stress
tests and everything checked out ok. No problems since. -

I am using 2400 Kingston ram, however it only runs at 2100 speed. No way to change it from what I can see. -
installed my 32gb crucial, works just fine.

This guy seems to get his xmp and XPS15 to run at 2400 -

Funny, we have the exact same memory module model and mine shows the memory speed as 2100. -
I'm going to buy a model of the XPS 15 with 8gb of RAM, but I want to upgrade it to 16. What kind of RAM would be best for that? Would any model work?
I didn't want to make a new thread for this, so this thread seemed appropriate to ask. -
Any DDR4 2133 will work from what I understand.

thanks
I'm going to check the store page right now, but does anyone know if the 8gb model uses one 8gb stick, or two 4gb ones? It'd be great if I only had to buy 1 8gb stick.Last edited: Jan 13, 2016 -

Mine came with 1 8GB stick -
I've got this. It's on its way, should snap 'em in this weekend.
Crucial 32GB Kit (16GBx2) DDR4-2133 SODIMM
CT7891608
- DDR4 PC4-17000 • CL=15 • Dual Ranked • x8 based • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR4-2133 • 1.2V • 2048Meg x 64 •
-
What obvious performance differences are you seeing? And have you deleted the swap file?
-
Deleted the swap file? Not recommended imo
-
DDR4 SODIMM 2133 speed or higher (jedec value is 2133 regardless of advertised speed as the advertised speed is dealt with via XMP and this laptop doesn't support that)
-
Buy a kit, don't add another 8gb as it will cause instability, DDR4 doesn't mix well.

He was asking if the 8gb model came with a single 8gb stick or 2 4's. And since when does DDR4 not mix well? It runs at the slowest timings of the slowest stick. Not to mention the OP could buy the same model that already comes in the XPS, saving money. -
Since it came out. I have a Asus R5E board and the forums have found lots of issues resulting from people thinking they are saving money buying 2 RAm kits then wondering why the system is unstable, it isn't like DDR3 and below where it didn't matter what you threw in as it always went to the lowest jedec value, this stuff has memory training & different startup voltages from its running voltage. Official word is not to mix and those that did then bought a single kit have become stable again. Considering you cannot tune memory values on this laptop you rely on the Jedec value that is no longer valid when a 2nd stick is added.

Just trying to help as it would be tempting to throw in a 8gb stick rather than buying a new kit of 2 sticks

It sounds like the majority of those users are on desktop boards and are filling the slots. DDR4 is like DDR3 in the fact that it reads the slowest jedec value, they didn't change the system. The official word from the Asus desktop board marketing department is not to mix them. I will agree that buying a kit is the best option, but if someone only has 30 bucks and needs 16gb, purchasing the same model memory module will likely work. As cool as it would be, memory makers don't specifically bin every pair of ram, they test to ensure it runs to the standard they are selling it as.
Desktop users are likely having more issues because it is much more difficult on a memory controller to run 4x sticks than 2x. "kits" with 4 sticks have been tested to run at those speeds as 4x sticks. My guess is they are likely better chips, or their sub timings are loosened up to ensure they will run in 4x mode.Last edited: Jan 19, 2016 -
Out of curiosity are configurations such as 24 GB or say 6 GB or 12 GB supported by this model.
