I want to buy an XPS 15 Skylake 4K touch but I really want to have the two drive option, whicjh I understand I should go for the smaller battery option. As far as I can see, Dell US will only do that for $1649 with a 1Tb and 32Gb option and I would have to wait some time to get it.

There is a reasonable option for the computer at the Microsoftstore but that comes with the larger battery. From what I have read, it is possible to downgrade the battery and install a cage fro a second drive. How easy is it to do that and what accessories would I need to buy? Would these only be available from Dell?

I wish I could find a cheaper version of the 15 touch with the smaller battery and the HDD cage and SATA cable already installed but I have not found anyone else selling this.

    Any advice?

    TIA

Buy the 1TB/32GB option, and just upgrade the M.2 SSD yourself. The reason is because it is dead simple to find an M.2 SSD in any capacity, and any speed, that you want. A lot of people who buy XPS 13/15 end up doing an aftermarket SSD upgrade anyway, to get the speed and capacity they want.

If you do it the other way, its going to be a giant pain in the rear. Because you'll need to buy a battery, adapter cable, and adapter cage. All of those arent sold by Dell, so you'll need to somehow find it on the aftermarket. And since this laptop is so new, those parts are VERY hard to find.

So if you want smaller battery / dual-drive, just deal with the wait from Dell. I promise you it will be far less frustrating than trying to find 3 rare aftermarket parts for a laptop that was just released.

Anywhere I can buy it off the shelf and not have to wait weeks for Dell to manufacture and deliver it?

See my post again. I hit a button too fast, before I completed my post.

As for where to get it... Try amazon.com and eBay. I've bought brand new Dell laptops teice on eBay before, specifically to avoid the long wait from Dell. Don't be too worried about scams. Just look for a buyer with very high ratings, sales volume, and history of selling similar items (expensive electronics).

To give you an idea, I bought a Dell XPS M1330 in 2007 from a seller with 99.8% rating, and 1000+ reviews. I recently bought a Dell XPS 13 from a seller with 99.8% rating, and 10,000+ reviews. Those sellers are the kind that are safe to buy from.

Thanks. I've found a model (XPS9550-10000SLV) that just comes with a 1Tb SSD so I assume that must be the two drive version although the website does not mention the battery capacity. Am I right that the connectors needed for an additional m.2 SSD must also be there so that all I will need to do is install another SSD and will then be able to select in the BIOS to boot from the m.2 drive?

Correct. If it already has a hdd and SSD in it, then all you need to do is swap out the SSD. All of the supporting hardware will be there.

From the description, this one only has a 1Tb SSD so I assume the m.2 slot must be empty.

Anyone out there got this model?

Yeah the m.2 would be empty. Dell has some nice service manuals with good pictures.
