    (I posted this in the owner's thread but got no replies, maybe it gets some traction as separate thread.)

    How does one update the Toshiba firmware SSD? There's no GUI. I followed the readme from the firmware download and I created a USB bootable drive, disabled secure boot, booted into the usb, pressed "u" as per instructions but it's like nothing happens, no errors but on the end it says "there is no target device".

    HWInfo still says Drive Firmware Revision: AADA4101. Any ideas? This is the firmware I'm, trying to update to;

    Well just 2 days ago I did a clean install following your guide, I am almost positive I am in AHCI mode...I doubt I'd miss something so crucial. I'll check when I get home. Any other ideas besides that?

    stick a usb stick in (can be the one with the firmware on) and make sure it is set as the primary boot device making the SSD the 2nd, I seem to remember this crap with my old Samsung 840 evo drive, not sure if it applies here.

    Hi,

    Theres a bug in the .efi file. If you look at nvmefwup.efi you can see that it incorrectly tries to match 5KDA4101 instead of 5KDA4103 (maybe you also have this release). You can check this by manually running: nvmefwup.efi -v

    So by instead manually running: nvmefwup.efi -f 5KDA4103 5KDA4103.sig
    you can successfuly install the firmware, until DELL notice this bug and correct it.

    Se attached image below.

    Regards

    Nils

    The only way Dell will catch this is if enough of you with that drive open a support ticket and link to that post (and copy and paste it)

    Reply I got from Dell;

    You can not import the firmware update for an XG4 SSD.

    According to the order, you have installed an XG5 SSD (Part Number: 70KCW -> SSDR, 512G, P34,80S3, TSH, XG5).

    I'm sorry for the confusion with the wrong firmware type on the support page. There seems to be a tagging error that causes the wrong firmware to be displayed. In general no update should be needed on your SSD at this point. Do you have any technical issues with your system?

    HWInfo says I have KXG50ZNV512G NVMe TOSHIBA. Can I/Should I update using @wysinwyg instructions?

    you essentially just refreshed your firmware since its identical to the one on the ssd

    you shouldnt need to do this, 5KDA4103 is the firmware version and you are already up to date. The reason for this update is to allow people that are running a non windows os to update the drive in case you have outdated firmware.

    you can easily check this by checking the windows version of the utility (if you are running windows)

    https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=T0X0P

    executing the file (the firmware updater will tell you the same thing that you are already on the latest version) and extracting the firmware updater executable with 7zip you can hash the enc file (the actual firmware) and compare it to the sig file thats on the EFI version of the update and its exactly the same as the older firmware. (both have a sha hash of 23E3813C3406B20149F56CFC299E6BEC6CD209E6)

    most people by now should have the newer firmware OOB so its only really needed for a small subset of older laptops. But as always never hurts to check.
