You'll probably have to go into the bios and reset it to default, that usually allows for overclocking again (although this may be a temporary loop hole).

Basically restart your computer, press F2 to enter the bios, load the defaults, save, and restart.

I haven't watched any videos on it, but this one appears to show how to do it:

Do you have Intel XTU installed on your XPS? I do not, maybe this is the difference?

i downgraded my bios to 1.18 but after a laptop reset, bios 1.19.2 automatically installed again. since i got 1.19.2 as a firmware upgrade from windows update, i disconnected from the internet, and downgraded the bios again. but after another reset, it automatically upgraded to 1.19.2 again.
    edit:
i also tried deleting my windows update cache and folder but still the same, 1.19.2 autoinstalls itself after a reset.

is there some way to prevent this?

you can uncheck the UEFI Firmware Update Via Capsules under security settings in the BIOS which will prevent windows 10 from installing the bios for you.

There is another useful setting available in the Group Policy Editor that allows you to be notified when updates are available, but those updates aren't downloaded and installed until/unless you decide to do so.

With that setting enabled, when there is a notification for something like a BIOS update, I can, then, use the wushowhide tool to block that update from being installed with other updates.

In the GPE, navigate through the following path.

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update

    Enable and select option #2.

    Hey guys,

Recently I acquired a Samsung 970 EVOPlus (1TB) to upgrade my old Toshiba drive that came with the laptop.

What I want to know is how can I have the best performance from this PC.

I read some information on this topic and others, so here are some questions for you:

1 - What is the best way to do a clean install with this drive? Is it better to enable AHCI?
2 - I don't know why, but I just had bluetooth with this PC on the first month. After that, I even changed the wireless card to Intel AC 8265, but no luck. The problem aren't the drivers, at least I installed and reinstalled a bunch of them and it never worked. On the BIOS the bluetooth is not detected as well. Could this be an hardware problem? Do you have any idea how can I troubleshoot this?
3 - I read on other topic that Speedshift is not enabled by default. Is this important?

Let me know if you have more tips or need more information about my machine. I really appreciate all the help you can give me.

how can i reinstall or activate it? or is there some other way to resize external monitors?

    1. I do believe achi is recommended for Samsung drives.
3.I enable speedshift thru throttlestop, which I also use to undervolt.

By enabling the speedshift on throttlestop, the changes will persist on the next boot?

Regarding the number 2, have you experienced problems with Bluetooth at all?

This guide can help with SpeedShift.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/dell-xps-speed-shift.796891/

Dell did not enable SpeedShift in BIOS (unless they added the feature in a recent BIOS).

So ThrottleStop is the easiest way to enable SpeedShift IMHO; however, that will need to be re-enabled at each boot.
In that thread, you will see some hacks to enable SpeedShift.

In the ThrottleStop thread, you will see steps to launch the software at each boot.

For the SpeedShift EPP, Windows seems to fight ThrottleStop. So you can enable the windows power options EPP drop down and match those with the EPP you type in ThrottleStop

No, I need to run TS again next bootup for speedstep to be active but you can automate this as pressing mentions.
Re Bluetooth, I get weaker pairing than my phone, but it still pairs, just takes longer. That's the only issue I've noticed with my Bluetooth. And if iirc, it's also controlled by the killer WiFi card.

I think I got everything to work, except the bluetooth, which I'm afraid is a hardware problem.

Basically, installed the 970 Evo Plus (1 TB), which is much faster than the older one. I also followed the tutorials to undervolt and optimize some of the Windows' settings using Throttlestop. Now I have the SpeedShift enabled on startup and good temps on this guy. Next thing to update is the battery that has an wear level of 75% :vbeek:

    Thanks for your help!

Just clean installed my 9560 and upgraded to a 970 Evo Plus from a 960 Pro. I missed using Gonzo's ISO tutorial but now is a moot point because it's a very straightforward process (thanks gonzo!). Also upgraded my wifi from the 9260 to the AX200 and increased ram to 32gb.

Everything running smoothly! Just need to redo my undervolt. EDIT: just realized 1.19.2 bios doesn't allow me to use xtu or throttle stop? Any ideas? Reset bios to factory settings? Thanks.

    Hi everyone!

I'm having problems with the temperature of my VRMs, again.

    My System
    i7-7700HQ // 4k UHD // 16 GB RAM // 512 GB Toshiba M.2 // Windows 10 Build 19041.450 // Intel Driver 27.20.100.8476// Nvidia Driver 451.67

    My Problem
Maybe 1 or 2 months ago my system suddenly started running hot again and throttled the CPU and GPU. After trying to figure out why I discovered that, thanks to plundervolt, the new BIOS update (1.19.2) removed the undervolting I had. Well, great. I updated all my drivers, downgraded the BIOS, etc. Nothing really helped. So after more research I found out how to re-enable the undervolt and bring my CPU and GPU temps down again (If anyone is still struggling with the fix, I can post/link to how I did it).
BUT now under full load (CPU+GPU) my VRMs are getting into the mid 90°C (~200°F) and therefore power limit throttling the CPU. The rest of my system is stable at around 75°C (~165°F).

What I've tried to fix this
Before the problem my temps were pretty much in check. Under full load, of both the CPU and GPU, I was getting:
    CPU: max. 80°C // GPU: max. 75°C // VRM: max. 75°C
Back then I did the usual stuff:
    • Fresh Windows installation
    • Undervolted the CPU/Cache -100 mV and iGPU -70 mV (ThrottleStop)
    • "Overclocked" the GPU so it did run at max. 0.85 V at 1569 MHz (was enough for me and mostly kept the GPU below 70°C)
    • Did repaste the CPU/GPU with Arctic MX-4
    • Taped the gap between the fans and heatpipe fins (removed all the dust)
    • Lifted the laptop ~2cm (~0.78 inch)
    • Tried bridging the VRMs with thermal pads to the heatpipe (Didn't change anything, so I removed it again)
    What I did now:
    • Installed newest drivers -> everything still hot
    • Re-enabled my undervolt (again, thanks plundervolt...) -> CPU/GPU warmer than before, but some improvement
    • Overclocked the GPU again (Tried different voltages and 0.85 V - 0.90 V appear to be the best for me) -> GPU cool again
    • Re-taped the fans and heatpipe (almost no new dust, which was surprising) -> no change
    • Did repaste the CPU/GPU again with Arctic MX-4 and applied new thermal pads to the heatpipe around the GPU (Arctic 0.5 mm and 1.0 mm Thermal Pads) -> back to old temps
    • Tried the bridging again (no change)
    • Bridged the PCH to the case with thermal pads
    • Cooled laptop stand (no change)
    Current state
Still, my VRMs appear to be 10-20° hotter than the rest of my system. See max. temps (CPU+GPU) in the image below.

    Some synthetic loads:
    MSI Kombuster: GPU: 68°C // VRM: 82°C
    Cinebench: CPU: 75°C // VRM: 70°C
    Prime95 [email protected]: CPU: 75°C // VRM: 77°C
    Aida64: CPU: 80°C // GPU 75°C // VRM: 87°C

I'm also having problems with Prime95. I can't run any FFT tests without exceeding the 45W limit and therefore getting power limit throttled. When I reduce the 4-core-boost to 3.2 GHz I'm just below 45W. Before my problem, I had no problems with Prime95 and power limit throttling at 3.4 GHz.

Yeah, so I'm running out of ideas. I do know that the overheating VRMs are nothing new, but the sudden change bewilders me. Especially the big difference in temperature. Maybe it's a software error? Maybe malware? I don't know. Currently I don't have the time to reinstall windows, but it can't be that simple.

So I'm thankful for any sort of input.
    Cheers

Looks normal... unfortunately the cooling for the XPS15 is sub par... VRM cooling is non-existent and you need like 6mm of thermal pads to dissipate to the bottom of the case. In addition, the heatpipes and actual surface area of the cooler is too little to actually adequately dissipate the amount of heat combined for the GPU and CPU at the same time... Even with the bottom case off which I current have right now, my GPU/CPU WITH LIQUID METAL thermal paste still gets upto 77C when gaming... its just an unfortunate piece of the laptop... I'm getting an Asus G14 next. It's got 4x the CPU/GPU horsepower than the 9560....

    Try these tweaks

Did you blow all the dust out of the radiators?

Good clamping force on the heatsink is important but a few people here have blown through the motherboard so best you can do is even firm torque on the screws.

Install Dell Command | Power Manager - set thermal management to cool.

In ThrottleStop, check SpeedShift. Set EPP to 0 for max performance and 255 for max power savings. About 78 permits max clocks but is not flat-out. SpeedShift is best CPU power control tool. You should also enable the Windows "processor energy performance preference policy" and make sure that is set to equivalent EPP (this is on a 0-100% scale); there is a thread on NBR showing how to do it.

Some people have had success with higher CPU cache undervolts on newer CPUs. You can try that.

It is possible you need to repaste. Even the professional techs here might repaste a couple of times to get optimal results. One clue of a suboptimal paste job is seeing large deltas in core temps under stress (range should be well below 5*c IMHO).

    Thanks for the answers!

@Philaphlous It's still strange that it suddenly changed. I tried the VRM-thermal pad-Case approach and it helped. Instead of 95°C, my VRMs are around 80°C now. I probably won't buy another DELL, which is sad since the build quality is great. The G14 looks interesting, I'll look into it.

@pressing Everything is clean and tight. Using Prime95@small, my CPU cores are 76/70/77/71°C (3,2GHz) and 82/76/83/76°C (3,4GHz). I did repaste a lot but couldn't bring the temps closer. I also reached the max. undervolt. Anything higher and my system crashes. Must have been unlucky in the silicon lottery.

I'm already using the Power Manager and I did play with the settings, but it didn't help with the VRMs. SpeedShift is set to 64. I couldn't find "processor energy performance preference policy", but I'll try it later.

I also figured out why Prime95 was having problems. While using MSI Afterbruner the CPU used ~10W more. Since the problem only occurred when using Prime95 I'll just ignore it.

Just a heads up the thermal limit is pretty much maxed out with the laptop...I figured it was maybe the fans being blocked from the grille on the bottom of the case...nope... even with the bottom of the case off I still only managed 3-4C better in temps...Its actually quite surprising how little temps change when your under absolute ideal situations... on to the G14...hoping for a labor day sale.... I'm also hoping to eek out around ~10% boost in performance on that RTX2060 Max-Queue... that'd get me about 3.6-3.7x the performance of my GTX1050....lol my what 3 years does to tech....

my 4k screen broke and I'm having difficulty sourcing locally.
Any leads where I can get the screen alassembly in the USA for a decent price? Any info would be appreciated.

Also, will the 1080p variant work with my 9560 or is the 4k screen 'hardwired' into the bios?

Yep - I'm getting the same....also on win 10 2004. I've been trying to track down the cause for the past couple of days as it is messing with my OCD.

I suspect it is some Intel graphics driver issue though I am unsure where to start. I tried reverting to latest Dell OEM driver (I usually install latest Intel one) but that didn't fix it, though I also noticed windows updated the driver automatically from the Dell OEM driver v26.20.100.8142 driver to an Intel v27.20.100.7990 after reboot. I had previously been on the latest Intel driver v27.20.100.8783.

Troubleshooting video on XPS 9560 posted today. Looks like reseating RAM or disconnecting CMOS battery was the fix.

We can see a lot of measured good voltage and resistance readings throughout the board in the video so this may be a helpful reference

That was answered in the forums. I'm pretty sure the igpu is used but you can search to confirm.

planning to replace my killer wifi with the intel 9260. some questions tho:
    - do i need to uninstall the killer drivers before doing this (i have the intel drivers downloaded already)?
    - videos show some people putting black wire on black connector and others doing the reverse as per the killer card. does it matter which way i connect the wires or not?

You can wait to uninstall the killer drivers until after the install, its just preference.
Whenever I switched the wifi cards, i just went by the color coding on the card...not sure if this changed in your situation.

Hello guys, 2 days ago i decide to do a clean install of windows 10 20H2 and without notice it windows update downloaded bios 1.19.2 (i had 1.9.4) and when i restarded windows to complete the updates (i have it connected to a external monitor) wouldn`t do anything, i disconnected the external monitor and still the laptop screen was black but the fans was on and the light power on, i waited but still nothing and i decided to shut it down, i had to press more than 10sec do shut it down.

After that when i start the laptop after the dell logo i got this (A7) Me FW Downgrade - Request MeSpiLock Failed https://imgur.com/IgkLVZ7 and the processor was stuck at 1.6ghz, i tried to update with the latest bios 1.20.0 and i got this error https://imgur.com/jcbRDa2 https://imgur.com/y3IZnoW

I tried this and it didnt work https://www.dell.com/community/Desk...owngrade-Request-MeSpiLock-Failed/m-p/4728275 I tried to flash it with a bootable usb flash driver and i got the same error. But when i tried to update pressing F12 and chose bios update option i got this screen https://imgur.com/wAy599k

After all that i opened the laptop and do a CMOS reset, the processor came back to normal but i still got the (A7) Me FW Downgrade - Request MeSpiLock Failed and i cant updated or downgrade bios.

    Any ideas, help? thanks

SpiLock sounds like innocent enough software lol. Particularly running on the innocuous & transparent Intel Management Engine.

This is a suggestion for a different computer

my 9560 is clocking down to 0.8 GHz every time i use an adobe application (bridge, photoshop, lightroom) - or maybe it always when the nvidia display driver is supposed to be used. google does not seem to know anything about this. do you?

obviously, those are the programs most needing the computing power. they are almost useless at 0.8 GHz...

but for me it happens before the computer has overheated or reached its limits, and it did not happen when i had an older version of win10 on the machine. yes, my nvidia drivers are the latest from dell.

id try reinstalling or rolling back to your old nvidia driver and see if that solves the issue.

rolling back the nVidia drivers is a good idea. worth a try. but the software environment is so complex that re-install is not really an option.
