After having this laptop for 3 weeks I finally connected it via HDMI to HDTV. When I play a video file I realized the audio output is distorted. The audio would be silent for 2 seconds and then on. After 10 seconds, or 2 minutes (because this is really random), the audio would be cut off for 2 seconds and then have audio again.
Another thing, I also get static from time to time.

Is there something I need to configure?

The laptop installed NVIDIA high definition audio drivers the first time I connected via HDMI, the screen resolution on the TV is adjusted to 1080p fine, and the sound control panel detects SONY TV as the default audio.

My 2 year old Lenovo did not have this issue, but then again, I did do a clean install of the system, whereas this XPS 15 L501x laptop is factory pre-configured with the latest NVIDIA video drivers.

    Any help would be great.

I also went to disable Enhancements under the Enhancement tab under Properties and that did not help at all.
Is the NVIDIA high definition audio drivers that was installed after first connect the problem? Or do I need to install those audio drivers manually?

Have you installed the latest nvidia driver or the latest dell nvidia drivers? Last time I connected with HDMI to HDTV it worked fine, I used the dell nvidia drivers back then.

Only problem I had at that time was the audio getting noisy after 1 hour playing time. Anyone experienced this?

I noticed the same thing the first time I played a blu-ray right to the HDTV. I wonder if it has something to do with the dts or 5.1 sound.. Anybody try going through an HDMI receiver to see if that changes anything?

What I noticed is when I hear static, it is actually the laptop screen being "fuzzy" with a distorted "buzz/static" screen as in the video is distorted.

The static does not occur when playing mp3s and DVDs, just video files off the hard drive.

This is coming from Dell's official video drivers.

    GT420m.
I downgraded to the previous Dell video driver before the latest January drivers and still produced the same results. I'm hoping it's not a faulty video card. I have no problems playing videos right from the machine, except when connected via HDMI.

Guy I had this problem over the weekend but fixed it. So please go into the control panel -> audio devices -> right click your TV/Screen -> Set as default.

    Done.
