Hey, so I recently got this XPS 15 as a replacement to my studio. I connect my laptop a lot to the tv for movies and stuff. But, I can't seem to get it to work on my current XPS 15. I tried connecting to three different tv's and with 2 different cables, one 1.3 and one 1.4 HDMI cables. The guys at Dell said it was probably the cable, but it wasn't. Can anybody help me? I know it's NOT the tv or the cable. Has anyone else experienced this problem or know the solution? I've played with ALL the settings too. I really have no idea.

You need to be a lot more specific about what you tried and what the results were. For example:
What settings did you try?
Did you set the TV to accept input from the right port?
Did you see only a black screen on the TV?
Did the laptop's display change?
Note, those questions are just examples. When requesting technical help you need to provide a lot more detail than just saying it doesn't work.
Note 2: I have used my XPS 15 with a TV via HDMI cable, so it does work. -
Do you already tried in "Configure multiple screens" -> "My screen isn't displayed" -> "Rigorous Screen detection"?
Do you have the latest drivers? I recommend you to use the version 290.53 beta for notebooks.
P.S. *Agrees with toronto -
Sorry, I guess that was really vague. I was just on the phone with Dell Support for 2 hours and they tried messing around with all the settings and just told me it was the hdmi cable which is wasnt. I just updated my driver too and i tried the rigorous screen detection and it didnt work. So, when I connect my laptop the tv doesn't detect anything, but my laptop does and it readjusts the screen. When I extend the display my laptop ends up being the extended part which means the main display is being shown on the tv, which it isn't. I connected to two tv's, my Samsung plasma says not connected and my Insignia LCD says not supported. I'm on the right channel and connecting to the right ports.

Try this... I checked Dell Forums for a while and found this:

Well. I'll tell you what I've tried and figured out what was going wrong. basically I hooked up hdmi cable then put a hdmi to dvi converter on then hooked that up to a monitor and it fails. I looked around and found out that (nvidia or the intel 3000 runs the output for hdmi) but nonetheless either the 540M or the intel 3000 does not allow digital format or w.e so it doesn't work.
tl;dr hdmi --> dvi converter does not work on hdmi because of the video card.
I'm not asking for help, I'm just telling you what I learned to save you some time (if this helps at all)
Also What I am doing right now is just buying an apple mini display port >> dvi converter and doing it that way because this was confirmed to work -
thanks panduhsaur! i've been reading online and figured that was the problem, so all i need is minidisplay port to hdmi adapter? do you think there is anyway to fix this, like a driver update or something in the future? or will i always need to use the minidisplay?

One of my hdmi cables dosn't work with it and another does, I got mine working by plugging it in, laptop should respond by detecting it and press FN F1 to get the display menu up to display to the tv.
Thats how i got mine to work, going through the desktop-rightclick-screenresolution didn't work for me.
My xps 17 works straight from hdmi output on the laptop to hdmi input on the tv, no minidisplay port adapter needed. -
i tried 3 different hdmi cables, two 1.3 and one 1.4. Neither worked, I also tried on three different tv's. I used fn 1, windows button and p, the screen resolution option, and the nvidia options. none of those worked. one of my tv's says "not supported" when I plug my laptop in. I also tried the tv's and hdmi cables with two other laptops. so it is the laptop and not the cables. and I also updated all of my drivers.

bleh I'm still having issues with mini display port(dvi converter) + dvi cable ==> monitor.
on anotoher note. I tried hdmi + hdmi converter ==> monitor (using studio xps 16) and it worked with no effort at all =.=
Tried same thing with hdmi on xps 15 and nothing happens. terrific.
Now I just need to figure out what is failing the mini display port or dvi cable. *Sigh I have no spare cables on me either.
