What do i need to get my l502x to output to a u2711 or u3011 ? confused as to hdmi ( i think it's a late enogh version but is it enabled ? ) or some kind of display port lead ?

Also once it's hooked up what other displays can i run at the same time ?

    Thanks

AFAIK, the version of HDMI on the L502x supports 2560x1600 (and mini DisplayPort does as well). I'd go with a mini DisplayPort cable from Monoprice to avoid having the nVidia card constantly on (with additional fan noise, etc). This would maintain full usage of Optimus while externally connected to the monitor.

The xps hdmi port may support 1600p, not a single monitor actually accept such resolution over HDMI. They cap on 1200p.

Thanks for the replies, so it sounds like display port is the way to go then, can someone tell/show me exactly what display port lead i would need ? and connecting tis way would still give me hdmi usage too so i could connect one other standard res monitor ?

    Thanks

Did anyone come up with a definitive solution to this problem?
I just bought an XPS 15Z believing it would drive the Dell 3008WFP at 2560X1600 just as the XPS M1730 that it is replacing does, but it does not seem to work.

I researched the GT525M before buying the machine and it supposedly supports the 2560 X1600 resolution. I also confirmed ith the sales staff that it would run an external monitor at this resolution. But.... no matter what I have done so far, the highest resolution offerred is 1900X 1200.

What I have tried so far....
Downloaded latest drivers for both monitor and card (monitor from Dell, Card from NVidia).
    Connected via HDMI
Connected via MiniDisplay Port -> MiniDisplayPosrt-DVI cable -> Monitor. (Not sure if this is "Active" or not. I don't know what that means)
Connected via MiniDisplay Port -> VGA Adapter -> Monitor.
Restting resolution via the windows resolution screens
Resetting the resolution via the NVidia control panel.
Setting a Custom Resolution in the NVidia control panel (it gives an error saying that the resolution 2560X1600 @ 60Hz is not supported by the monitor).

The only other connection option is MiniDisplay Port -> Display port, but I don't want to go out hunting for another cable given that I have already bought every cable known to man or beast witout getting a result.

I am lost and about to return the machine. The sales staff told me it would run the monitor no problem.

Does anyone know if L502x is able to send audio over its mini displayport as it does with hdmi?

Display Port is a video-only connection afaik.

As for bpolky, the issue is the connectors you are using. DVI CANNOT run over 1200p resolution (at least everything I have seen indicates this->all higher-res screens are Display Port too). Yes, display port can run your desired resolution, but running through an HDMI or a DVI cable nullifies this. The only way to run over 1200p is to get a Display Port CABLE (or in this case a Mini Display Port -> Display Port).

    dual link DVI supports 1600p.
HDMI = single link DVI + sound.

That's right, dual-link can get there, I forgot. But I don't know that the converters necessarily get the conversion correct.

I remember to reach that requires a pretty expensive adapters to go at least and beyond.

They usually noted in their specification support.

I don't think so. I've never worked with displayport before, but as per wikipedia, audio support is optional, and as per description of a displayport-to-hdmi adaptor in amazon, it can send audio if the source supports that... So the big question is: does l502x support audio over its mini displayport?

I am no expert on this issue, but I am currently running the same monitor at 2560X1600 from my Dell M1730 using the DVI output on the laptop and the DVI input on the monitor. 'Dual Link' DVI I believe can run this resolution. Given that I am currently running he monitor this way, I think that proves that DVI can run 2560X1600.

Just wanted to follow up on my own question here a few days go on whether xps 15 does send audio over its mini displayport:

So I bought a mini displayport to hdmi adaptor from ebay ( Mini DisplayPort DP to HDMI Adapter For MacBook Pro Air | eBay) and used it to attach my L502x to my external monitor and I can confirm that the audio is working through mini displayport just similar to a direct hdmi link. The pleasant surprise is that attaching monitor this way would not result in automatic activation of the nvidia gpu. It seems that the hdmi gets it signal through nvidia chip, but displayport is directly linked to the IGP. So I no longer have to deal with fan noise and heat while working on a word file on my external monitor...
