Anyone else have a slight hang for about 10 seconds when the startup dots come together to form the windows symbol?

Try disabling the sd card reader and it'll drop you from a 26second startup to 14 seconds.

Have you looked for a newer driver for the card reader?

    Hi,

It may also because of some other programs, that are running during the start up. Please find below the link from Microsoft. It has the details about clearing start up to improve the system performance along with a ‘Fix it’ tab. You may refer to the same if required.

Perform a clean startup to determine whether background programs are interfering with your game or program

I hope this helps. Please do write back in case you need any further assistance.

    Thanks and Regards

My 10 second issue was on a clean install. I went through all startup items, and services until I finally found it to be the sd card reader.

That's actually not true at all. When the dots of the Windows Logo start to come together it's actually initializing basic IO drivers (USB is one of these). It doesn't matter what programs you have running on startup because it hasn't even finished recognizing hardware at that point.

Oh my goodness...you are right. It does make it boot up within 10 secs. So so much faster!

Thanks for the tip! But...sigh, is this another dell problem with this laptop? or is this to be expected in most laptops?

However, sadly the CD checking sound is still there even if I try to disable the CD drive.

What's the cd checking sound? As for the wireless issue, I've had it but I've also somehow fixed it.

errr...are you telling me that you don't have the CD checking sound everytime you start your computer?

Everytime I start the computer or play a media (song/video), then the CD checking sound kicks up each time...and I am not sure about the WIFI issue coz i never had fast internet in the place i am staying anyway...so, can't really check it...

Isn't that normal though? What if you inserted a cd while the computer was off? Wouldn't the cd player need to suck it in to verify it was placed properly?

no, there's a CD checking sound when the CD drive is empty, everytime you start the computer....or play a media from your computer (not from any CD). The main thread suggests that everyone seems to have that problem...and you don't? teach me how did you do that! :p

well, anytime we/I turn on the laptop (be it from hibernate, from scratch), the laptop will have a CD checking sound...
and when you play a movie from your SSD/harddrive, the CD checking sound will start as well...

frankly, i am very surprised you don't have this problem....what did you do to your laptop? :D

Took me a bit of hunting to find this thread, but I have the 10-second pause also, and this fixed it. Thanks.

I take it no one has found a proper solution/driver that sorts it out? You'd think there'd be a simple way to tell windows to ignore the reader as it is booting. I did a clone from the 1Tb drive straight onto a 120Gb msata drive and had the issue... thought I'd stuffed something up, but even with all the Dell bloatware and stuff... 13seconds from power on to desktop, so thanks again.

cd checking is just that, the drive checking to see if a disk is inside. Can't void that happening on restart/power-up.
