I am piecing together an XPS 15 and saw that they now offer a 720p multi-touch screen display. I have scoured the internet and this forum trying to find out what the consensus is on this screen but haven't much info on it. Sure wish they offered the 1080p with a touch screen as that would be a no brainer for me. My current dell is 1680x1050 resolution so 720p would be a slight downgrade but the touchscreen would be nice. Anyone have any first hand experience with it or a link to a review?

So nobody knows anything about this 720p touch screen eh? Is it new? Anyone know how long it's been available?

Been available for about 2 months or so. Most people get the FHD, the plain 720p display on the XPS 15 is terrible according to most. Most people just want the awesome FHD display anyway so I doubt many bothered with the touch screen.

Resolution is far more useful than the touchscreen. The touchscreen is a gimmick and nothing more.

Resolution makes more of a difference than anything, and 1366x768 is a huge downgrade from 1680x1050.

Plus, the 1366x768 screen in the XPS is terrible (aside from a few lucky people who got different-brand LCD panels). You're wasting your money if you buy the Dell XPS 15 with anything but the 1920x1080 B+RGLED display.

The few lucky people get LG's 720p screen. Most get AUO's worst 720p screen on the market for a $1000 laptop.

To be honest, I don't see a touchscreen being any sort of use on a laptop unless it is a convertible tablet.

There are also a couple reports of people getting Samsung panels.

I hope you mean 1920x1080...but your point remains. I would be getting the FHD in the OP's position. Unless the laptop can be used as a tablet, which the XPS cannot, I don't see the point in the touchscreen. As someone already mentioned...

I mean 1680x1050 in the sense that the OP's old laptop is 1680x1050, and 1366x768 would be a downgrade from that.

I dont really see the benefit of a touchscreen on this 15". It does not fold into a tablet form, and it's hard to carry around a laptop as a tablet anyways. I also fail to understand the ergonomics of placing a laptop on a table and then reaching over to touch the screen??

The 720p display is trash but I wouldn't dismiss a touchscreen as a gimmick. Windows 8 is just around the corner and a touch screen will go a long way. I bet we'll start seeing 1080p displays with touch screen options next year.
