I just bought a Dell XPS15 R2 (L502) because of the $99 Streak deal this weekend. I'm coming from a Dell SXPS 16, which I love!

Everything about the new XPS 15 is better than my current machine, but I don't like how the new XPS line is ugly and thick (as many around the webosphere have noticed). I especially don't like the design of the new hinge, it looks considerably weaker than the model it replaced.

Any long term owners have anything to report about the durability of this new design?

The issue I have with is I use external monitor most of the time. During the boot up or other operation it always defaults to the laptop screen with I don't want it. This is becuase there is no lid close switch which cuts off the power or signal to LCD. My old laptop has lid switch and does this well.

It doesn't have latch, but it has the switch. Just watch it when you shut the lid -- you'll see it turns of the screen. The power settings can be adjusted for action when you close the lid -- you'll see it does work.

my hinge is fine (on l501x). everything is pretty solid.

had my laptop since Feb 2011 (and it was a refurbished model) and its even suffered a 3ft drop from my bed once.
