Need some help making a decision, I ordered the following off of the Dell outlet site On friday (the order hasn't shipped yet):

    XPS L501X
    15.6" FHD (1080p)
Processor: Intel Core i7-740QM Processor (6M cache, 1.73 GHz)
    8 GB DDR3 1333 Mhz Ram
    500Gb Hard drive (7200rpm)
    Nvidia 435M 2gb video card
    8X DVD +/- RW Drive
    Windows 7 64bit

The total price came to $1,032.15 (includes tax and next day shipping)

This laptop will be used for gaming primarily and my only concern is the Nvidia 435m video card. I can get the ASUS ASUS G53JW-XA1 off of Amazon for $1,349.00 + $3.99 next day shipping. The ASUS specs are:

Intel Core i7-740QM (1.73GHz Quad-Core with Turbo Boost up to 2.93GHz)
    6GB DDR3 1066MHz, 4 SODIMM Sockets, up to 16GB; Illuminated Keyboard
    Nvidia GTX 460M Graphics with 1.5GB GDDR5
    500GB HDD (7200RPM); Super-Multi Optical Drive; 802.11 b/g/n; 1x USB 3.0; 3x USB 2.0; 8-in-1 card reader; 2.0MP Webcam
15.6-Inch Full HD (1920x1080) LED Display; Windows Home Premium 64-bit Operating System

Now really the only diffferences are the ASUS has the better video card (Nvidia GTX 460M) but less memory/slower 6gb 1066 instead of 8gb 1333. So my question is, is it worth the additional $320 for the better video card?

Slower RAM doesn't mean anything. You'll maybe get a 5-10% gain in synthetic benchmarks. Real world use, you won't see the difference. DDR3 are very cheap these days, going to 8 GB RAM is like ~100 bucks.

In terms of gaming, the GTX 460M craps on the 435M and takes it's lunch money, but it's entirely up to you and what do you do with your laptop?

If it is going to be used primarily for gaming, then get the G53, it'll be WAY faster, and easily worth the extra $320. You can always upgrade the RAM later, and RAM is cheap, but you're stuck with the GPU for the life of the laptop.

Thanks for the responses I ended up cancelling the Dell order and got the Asus one because I thought the same thing about the video card since it can't be upgraded. I should have Tuesday, if anybody wants pictures or info on it let me know.

A mini review would be a nice way to pay off the info you got from the collegues.

And I would be interested on your findings about this rig.

bare in mind if you want to replace that memory into 1333mhz you have to disassemble everything for G53 (no backplate). get G73-XN1 if you can (around $100 more) unless you want portable laptop.
