Judging from photos I've seen, the speakers sure look smaller in the XPS 17 but this might be misleading, so how does the sound quality compare between those two models? Both have a subwoofer, right?

I think both are the same but the XPS 15 sounds better due to better placement of the speakers

They are actually a touch more powerful in the 17, a watt or two IIRC. Yea they look smaller, but the 17 is a bigger chassis. Just smaller in proportion to the chassis. But I don't know which sounds better, they have virtually the same placement but the 17 is bigger. Either way, the left speaker inevitably gets covered when gaming...

Comparing my XPS 15 to my wife's XPS 17, they sound about the same to me. The XPS 15 speaker placement is ideal, the XPS 17's... not so much.
