Got my XPS in June. In the first six weeks we had to repair to factory image twice. Going through the Dell XPS forum several other 1530 users have had the same problem.
The last time we had the problem the Dell support person made sure that all of my drivers were up to date.
Further, I think that my son may have been shutting down improperly (not a complete shut down but just hibernation).
Since we have made the two corrections no problems.
Could this be a coincidence? More importantly, have others had this problem? If so, what is the fix?

I would discount your son's usage habits as hibernation shouldn't result in any data loss; it merely writes the contents of the memory to a page file on the hard disk meant for just that purpose. Upon resume, the page file contents are reloaded into the RAM - improper shutdown would consist of cutting off power or shutting down the unit by holding down the power button.
I would use CHKDSK to scan the drive for bad sectors or filesystem errors on the hard disk; corrupt data is often the result of this. To run an error scan, go to:
Computer > Right-click HD > Tools tab > Error Checking
