I bought my XPS 1530 about 9 months ago and was noticing from the first few months that every day or every other day the laptop makes a loud screeching/whining noise (for about 1-2 seconds). It just happens once for the whole day, and then when I use the laptop again the day after or whatnot, it makes the same sound again (just once for the whole day, as before).

The sound resembles running your fingers down a chalkboard for a second or two. It sounds like it is coming out of the lower left area (when the laptop is open). I haven't noticed any issues with the HD or system or anything when it makes that noise, everything (from what I see and can tell) is functioning fine. But it still makes me worry.

Is that where the Hard Drive is? it sounds like it as I hear an occasion HD clicking noise from that same area too.

Has anyone experienced this, or can anyone shed some light on what might be causing this?

    Thanks in advance.

Well since the hard drive is in that area, that might be your problem. I have been having some clicking noises as well. I am going to chat with Dell soon about getting it replaced. Hopefully you have a good warranty and they can replace it for free.

I had this issue with 2 XPS 1530s that arrived to me (Original and replacement of the original). I determined it was a bad Hard Drive but running the diag disk and it found the issue. The results of the Diag determined bad sectors. The clicking sound usually means the Arm in the HD has fallen out of place and this HD will be going bad.

If it is underwarranty, I would recommend having them replace the HD.

I dont feel much for the idea to lose 10 months of data or let alone back it up

I have the same problem for clicking noise but i solve it by update firmware of my samsung hm500li.
Dell had written in its description that:
-This firmware update corrects a clicking noise.
I used it and my hard disk's noise and heat highly reduced.
You can Download it from this link: http://support.dell.com/support/down...&fileid=312131
olso you can download firmware for other models from Drivers and Download section in "SATA Drives" part.
olso I updated my BIOS by A12 ver. and my laptops works cooler now and i haven't problem by charging , ...
