SO i got dell xps 1530 about 2 weeks ago, I noticed that the HD spins constantly. I have the samsung 250gb 7200rpm. I could leave my comp Idle with screen closed and the left side of the palm rest would be very hot.

For awhile i thought this was normal but yesterday night I went over to my friends house and saw his was very quite and chilled down after it has been on the whole day. Can someone help me out?

If i press down on the left side palm rest i can fell the vibration a bit.

    Please Help.

I have the WD 320 drive in mine and although it doesn't really get hot, I can feel a slight vibration. There might be something constantly accessing the HDD which would explain why its not spinning down and getting so hot. I drive which spins idly wont get as hot as a drive which is reading and writing all the time.

Would you happen to know of some programs that access the hard drive constantly? or games? I dont have much on my paper, just some adobe files, pidgin, some games.

My hard drive is about 42 C when idle, it might go even higher, is that normal?

It is probably Vista. look into turning off Superfetch and Indexing.
