What drivers do I need to get my microphones (next to the webcam) working? I've tried the Dell webcam drivers (they don't fix anything) as well as installing Sigmatel audio drivers from both the CD and the Dell website, which kill all sound output.

Did you reinstall your operating system. If so, which are you running?

Wait, what? The SigmaTel drivers killed all sound output? Let's fix that first, then get to your microphone problem ;)

Is the SigmaTel device OK in Device Manager?

From my previous four installations of the SigmaTel drivers, the installation fails about half the time. On the occasions when it succeeds, everything looks fine. The computer thinks that the SigmaTel drivers are installed and fully functional. The audio devices are listed under SigmaTel Hidefinition Codec or whatever they call it. Speakers under the SigmaTel control panel say that they're working, and it can tell me wheher I have a pair of headphones plugged in or not. Volume control works as normal, however, there is absolutely no sound output. When running tests via the SigmaTel control panel, I get a message saying that the test failed to run.

I've been sticking with the default Microsoft drivers for sound, which appear to work fine. What should I be looking for when installing the SigmaTel drivers?

You have installed the Intel chipset drivers yes?

Dont forget the "soundcard" is a combination of the Southbridge and the Sigamtel working together.

Chipsets have been updated to Dell's latest and greatest. Should I be looking for them from Intel's site at this point?

I reinstalled the SigmaTel drivers and screwed around in the registry and settings and made *sound* work. If I try and record however, I get a "Recording device not found" error, and sound stops working until the next reboot.

What keys did you change? I'm curious.

What devices do you have on the record panel?

So, it appears that sound is working with the Sigmatel drivers (at least tentatively), but they don't seem to help at all with the microphone situation.

Actually, nix that, the Sigmatel drivers appear to cause audiodg.exe to crash randomly. Screw this, I'm going back to Microsoft's generic drivers. This is absolutely absurd.
