Currently using a 1680x1050, so I like more pixels obviously. But is the LED screen that great?

So do you already own a M1530 or planning to get one?
The resolution will depend on what you'll be doing with the laptop.

The LED is brighter and has better colours. The higher resolution screens have a higher resolution and some are better than others. I like higher resolution myself so the LED in it's current incarnation is not an option.

Planning on getting one for law school. Will be doing standard web, word processing, email, etc. Movies sometimes, games rarely.

Based on what you will be using your computer for, 1440x900 res would do just fine as well as 1680x1050. So it really just depends on whether or not you want to save a little bit of money. If you really enjoy a 1680x1050 res then you should go with that since even the non-LED screens are pretty good quality and brightness (assuming you don't get a defective one). I must tell you though, the LED screen when running at full power is a thing of beauty.

Go with the higher resolution screen. More workspace is always good and something that can do true 1080p is a big plus.

The higher resolution will look great on movies/games. However, you can run very few games with a stable frame rate having such a high resolution, and the icons will be miniscule on a 15.4'' screen. Switching to non native resolution will make all blurry

I have the 1440x900 LED screen on my 1530 and it is awesome! The font size is great as well (perfect for my eyes) - not sure why everyone thinks more pixels is better. Readability suffers, your graphics card can't keep up, and for what? A larger, unreadable desktop? I'll take efficiency and brilliant colors anyday. :D

Yes but would not playing oblivion or half life on 1680x1050 look far superior in pixel detail level? On this graphics card one could have a reasonable frame rate at the aforementioned resolution

its not a 1680x1050, its a 1900x1200. Obviously that is a lot more pixels than a 1440x900. I get that there will be small icons. How good looking is the LED screen relative to it?

I put my money on the LED because I figured these things. The 1480 or whatever resolution is still some form of hi-def right? I know 720p looks a hell of a alot better than 1080p on my flatscreen on the wall. If I really have the craving to watch full 1080p I can do so on my big TV. The 8600 is powerful but not powerful enough to run anything in good FPS at native resolution 1900+ or whatever..

I bet the LED in native looks better.

Do blue-ray discs always output 1080p? If your screen isn't capable of 1080 lines of resolution, am I right to assume the blue ray player converts the resolution to fit the screen? The only similar screen dell offers to 1080p is a 1920x 1200, but that still isn't exactly 1080 vertical lines of resolution. I realize it doesn't really matter on a 15.4" screen anyway, more curious than anything. Would 120 vertical lines just be "cut out" with a 1920x1200 screen?
