Rigs with desktop quads and sli'd 9800's can't play it at higher resolutions. So to expect a single mid range laptop gpu to run it any higher is expecting a bit much.

bty I think it runs quite well.

It can but you have to be prepared that some textures may be missing or loading during the ride.

You need to get to the folder where GTA is installed. Then create a shortcut on the desktop to file "LaunchGTA4" . Then open properties of that shortcut add -norestrictions parameter at the end of the path to the file. As you do it , logon to Rockastar Social Club(you have to be signed in to make this parameter work) , but don't click "Play" button. Instad of it run the game from the shortcut. After this you will be able to modify all game parameters includeing resolution, no metter the VRAM usage.

My M1530 runs GTA IV on 1024x 768 on medium textures and everything else set to low. It gets 18-20 fps while drving which is fairly playable. And the last thing: its almost obligatory to defragment file system. The game gains about 25% of performance after doing that.

    PS Sorry for my English

How did you manage to achieve such good performance ? It's impossible just becuse of OC. Sth is not right. When I run the game on medium textures even in 800x600 and 0 of draw distance the VRAm usage is 100% and yours is 98% in much better resolution . I bet tha these are not results of XPS but of the other computer

I'm using laptopvideo2go drivers, DOX edition and overclocking to 630/1260/840. GPU goes around ~94* degrees, not more.

Killing all backround processes (including explorer.exe) and it works. I've heard original runs better than cracked/downloaded version and it's one of the few PC games I actually bought.

Also, I've heard these drivers give a good boost (havent tested yet) : http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_gtaiv_downloads.html

And check youtube, there are tons of people with 8600 M GT (DDR3) using practically the same settings. :)

And yes, these are the results of the lappy from my sig. @_@

OK, i can believe in those FPS.But sth is not right about Video Memory Usage. In these settings it sholud be much higher (changing resolution from 1024 to 1280 gives ~20 MB of VRAM, 260 MB is used only by textures in medium), so i cannot understand why having game on these settings (on my laptop similar settings require >300 MB of VRAM) you have only 92% of memory usage, while I have 100% on lower paramerters.

my M1330 (nVidia 8400 card) runs everything low and about 20fps.... not bad

my friend's alienware (m15x i think) with 9800 card can run about everything medium/med-high with no lag.....

try this, it tests your system to see if you can run a game.
For the M1530 (mine) it states that GTA: IV can run because i meet the minimum requirements but states that i cannot run the full experience as i do not have the recommended requirements for the game.
This actually isnt to do with the GPU as the 8600M is quite fast and advanced (even for new games) but its actully the CPU holding back as the game requires at least a quad core processor!
Give it a try and see for yourself.

Turns out its actually optimised for tri-cores, something along the lines of what the xbox 360 has. Seems it was coded for that, and they never bothered to optimise it for x86 hardware.

bty you don't need a quad to run this game, you just need one to run it at higher resolution, though even if you have one of those it doesn't neccessarily run magnificently (pics attached)

Left pic shows the usage of an i7 running gta,
Right pic is a comparison of different cpu's running it.

i have the cracked version and it runs great at 800x600 with low textures ..BUT after a few minutes it will go really really slow and crap out. i'm not sure if its just the cracked version or if my laptop is just broken. i idle at about 40 to 50 then in game run at like 100 +

    Probably down-clocking.

u think down clocking the CPU or GPU? i tried down clocking the gpu to the lowest possible speed of like 200 something and it still did it
