I got my xps 1530 on monday and I used vista media center last night to record some HD shows. Later on I connected my 1530 to my HD tv and set the audio out to hdmi instead of the speakers. When I played back the show, there was no audio on my tv, but when I started up media center, the start up sounds and the sounds when you navigate through media center played back through my tv speakers. Does anyone know how to get it so the shows sound will play back through my tv speakers?

Go to the start menu and type in "sound". On the playback tab you will have an option to select "speakers/headphones" or "HDMI" choose the one you want on click "set default" voila.

I had already switched the sound output from speakers/headphones to hdmi before I started up media center. When media center started up, the startup sound played through my tv's speakers, but when I played a previously recorded tv show through media center, there was no sound coming from my tv speakers so I know it is not a faulty hdmi connection because it was passing sound, just not on the recorded tv show.

I will have more time to mess with it tonight after I get home from work as it was late last night so I didn't have a lot of time.

hmmm..... try to play the recorded show on your lappy with the default on your laptop speakers. see if there are sounds on the recorded show. it maybe possible that the show was recorded without sound. how did you record the show? maybe you need some line in option for the sound.....

I used an ota antenna through mediacenter to record it. I will try playing the video with my laptops speakers tonight when I get home.

Curious, what brand of video capture device are you using?

It is the avertv hybrid nano express, it was on the accessories tab when I ordered my 1530 from dell. When I was watching live tv with it, and when I was watching and recording the show, there was sound through my laptop speakers.

hmmm....i think either you consult the manual for the accessory or you could ask help for dell chat support.

Have you already tried playing a movie DVD in media center to see where the audio output goes to?

My favorite app for playing/testing different media formats is VLC. You may also need to install this driver for better Dolby AC3 support
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/ac3filter/

I tested the video/movie clips that came installed with the computer that were in mediacenter and the audio went through my tv speakers fine. I then tried watching live HD tv through mediacenter to my sony lcd tv and no audio again. I think it has something to do with the Dolby digital sound on the HD tv feeds.
Is there a way to set media center to only output 2.0 audio as I don't have am audio system yet as I am waiting until I move before I get all of that.

I've done a lot of playing with different audio formats, mostly getting 5.1 & DTS audio to work or work properly on my desktop, but sorry I have not really played with mediacenter. I would think there would be a setup page to change the audio input/output. One thing I have found is that MS/media player has very poor audio support which is why I use VLC.

I'm going on travel the next few days as it will be a few day before I can hook up my laptop to my TV for testing, but you sparked my interest because I am thinking of getting a HD tuner for the laptop. I have a FusionHDTV card in my desktop, but it would be nice to be able to watch subscribed HD and not just in the clear HD, which is why I'm currently looking at the Hauppauge HD PVR 1212.

i fixed my problem. this has already been mentioned, it might be in another thread. but what i did was go to HDMI properties and unchecked all the encoded formats and sample rates under the supported formats tab. having any of them checked assumes that your receiver supports them when that may not be the case. even if you use the test option and you hear the sound, you're better off unchecking all of them cuz that was the case for me. hope this helps some of you having similar problems.

Yes, I got mine to work tonight by doing the same thing. Since I had dolby checked and the show came recorded in dolby, it was trying to send my tv dolby digital audio and it can't decode it. I got it working and then came here to post it, but I see you beat me to it. I feel like an idiot now for not trying this earlier. :)

I just picked up an XPS 1530 (my 2nd) on the Dell Refurb site.
I am going to use it as a multimedia pc in my entertainment center.
    Specs: Midnight Blue
    T8100|320GB 5400RPM|4G,667MHZ,2X2G|Blu-ray Rewritable Double Speed|6-Cell|Bluetooth|Intel Wireless N|8600M GT|Remote

    $839.00 direct from Dell.

It will be plugged into my Phillips 32" LCD TV via HDMI. I have a 1 TB WD Elements full of movies. It will sit on an Antec Cooler and have a 7-port USB hub up front. A Bluetooth mouse and KB will round it out.

It will complement my existing 1530:
    Tuxedo Black|T8300|250GB WD Scorpio|4G, 533MHZ 2x2G (WEI 5.1)|DVD-RW|9 Cell|Intel Wireless N|8600M GT|Webcam|Remote

I paid $1099 from the Dell refurb site last summer, and it is serving me well in Baghdad, Iraq. It runs every single game that I throw at it: Hell's Highway, Left 4 dead, Far Cry 2, CoD4, Rainbow 6 2. This machine doesn't just run them, it runs them very well. Paired with a Dell Bluetooth mouse it is the best laptop I have ever owned.
