Here's my problem. I have a xps1530 w/sp1 and I'm trying to watch a bluray movie with HDMI connected to my tv but no sound comes on with my tv rather the sound is coming from my laptop. I am able to get video but no audio.

Let me say that I did search this forum and the most common fix is to right click on sound icon to set HDMI output as default but this does not seem to work for me. I have a Sigmatel sound card and I believe my driver is up to date. It looks like I'm not able to set HDMI as m default playback.

    Can someone please help me!

Just to make sure you're doing the Control Panel part correctly...

    Go to your Control Panel,
In the top left area, click Classic view
    Click Sound,
There will be a sound device that does not have a green check next to it (might say High Definition Audio), right click that and set it as Default Device.
You may need to restart your computer.

I just tried that and still no sound. Is there supposed to be a green check mark below High Definition Audio once I set it as my default? It seems like nothing happens when I try to set HDMI as my default playback device.

Well mine has been working since I got my laptop with setting the primary audio device to HDMI vial control panel or the taskbar icon, but I tried to use it tonight and no go.....Wonder if this could be a common problem on these laptops, but mine did work in the past. Maybe a windows update issue? Mine even shows the computer outputing the audio, from the tray it has a green gain bar whe audio is outputed....n

I've tried everything and I can't get audio out of my tv. It's still coming from my laptop. Do I need to update my bios/video card driver?

Maybe I'll get on the phone with Dell's technical support.

I have the same/opposite problem, the green check is on the HDMI and when i tried to change to High Definition Audio it wont work. I have changed it it several times in the past but now it just stopped working.
If you get an answer from dell support please post it here.

I was on the phone with tech support last night and they couldn't get this fixed. Said I will need to swap out my motherboard because of a faulty sound card. Has this happened to anyone else? Something doesn't sound right.

The Dell rep updated my computer with the updated sigmatel driver and now I get no sound from my laptop...

i was having the same problem but i found a fix for my particular problem. maybe you can try this and hope it works for you too. i saw someone mention this in another thread. what i did was go to HDMI properties and unchecked all the encoded formats and sample rates under the supported formats tab. having any of them checked assumes that your receiver supports them when that may not be the case. even if you use the test option and you hear the sound, you're better off unchecking all of them cuz that was the case for me. hope this helps some of you with your problem.
