    Hi all -

I just got the Dell XPS 15z with 7200 rpm HD. There is a slight but constant vibration, which comes from the left palmrest.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Is this normal?

    Thank you.

Do you have a Seagate drive? Sometimes the latest firmware will quiet down noisy drives. You can also try QuietHDD, and fiddle with APM/AAM settings.

    Hi,

Apparantly, it is a Western Digital. What is a ssd?

    Thank you.

If it's the hard drive, does that mean that the HD is constantly spinning? Is that normal or is mine defective?

Yes, it's the Western Digital 7200 rpm hard disk.

It is constantly spinning loudly and vibrating at the same time. On some surfaces the vibrations cause even more noise. Also, the hard disk is a heat source contributing to even more fan noise!

I replaced the hard disk with a super quiet and cool SSD-disk after only one week. It was quite easy to remove the bottom of the laptop and replacing the hard disk - it took maybe 30 minutes. I called Dell and they said that the guarantee is still valid unless my actions causes any damage.

After this, my XPS 15z is completely silent when using it with Office or surfing...

    Hi Petpad,

What kind of ssd did you install? Is it expensive to buy?

Thank you very much for your help.

    Cheers.

SSD pricing depends on the space you need and if you care about performance vs reliability.

I had the same problem 2 years ago with my Latitude E6400. Dell sent a Western Digital drive to replace the vibrating Seagate but the WD wasn't that much better. I bought an SSD as I'd used one at work and was blown away by the speed (boots Win7 in 15 seconds) and that solved the issue. I think it's a combination of vibrating mechanical drives with a possible flaw in Dell chassis design.
