I'm considering getting an xps 15z and putting in a SSD. I talked to a rep on dell.com, and they said the 15z isn't compatible with ssd: Agent (Imran K): "and SSD is not compatible with XPS 15z"

Me: "what makes it incompatible with the 15z?"

Agent (Imran K): "because that system is not designed to support SSD"

Is that true, or just the sales person not knowing what they're talking about? I browsed some forums and found some people who seem to have done it just fine, but I don't want to put all this money into a system just to have it not work.

If it is possible to upgrade, do you have any suggestions as to which SSD I should choose (I'm looking in the 120 gb range)? And do you know how difficult it is to put in?

The rep is, as you guessed, talking nonsense. You can use an SSD with the 15z. I typically recommend Intel as a good balance between speed, reliability, and price, but there are plenty of options and sometimes choosing is like a religion.

It is, however, somewhat of a chore to get to the HDD if you're never cracked open a laptop.

I am hoping to get an XPS 15z as a replacement but dismayed that it doesn't have the option for an SSD. what are the chances I could convince them to install one in my hopeful replacement?

once again, Dell shows some real head scratching nonsense with their line up.

Any SSD will work, I installed my cheap kingstone 120GB SSD on it.
It runs great, don't believe dell's reps, they probably don't know what SSD is, and still using some 90's laptops.

Dell reps are clueless. ANY computer with SATA 2 or higher can support an SSD. Dell just doesn't give the option for the 15z.

I am looking all over the internet and do a search here and looking for the best way to open the bottom base cover so I can put in my new SSD.

My system is coming next week.

Can someone point me to the best write up?

    Thank you so much!

I know. Some people do not advice opening it unless u are professional.

What is the silver strip thing that will come off and you need a super glue to do it.

Some say use a credit card to open it.

Some say it can never be open with fingernails.

So what is the best way?

Yeah, you can break silver strip while opening without card. That is what happened to mine, so super glue is your friend :( But 2nd time i've watched youtube video disassembling xps 15z, one good guy posted it in February. So that was very helpful. Documentation link of Dell is not so much informative. You'd better to see the video.
