I currently have an XPS 1530 and I need a new laptop as I am giving this one to the wife. This laptop has been quite good to me. A couple of questions about the XPS 16.

-The XPS 1530 is the perfect size for me. How much larger is the XPS 16? Is it Substantial? I don't want something similar to the 17 inch laptops that Dell has out there...they are just too large, Any insight would be appreciated.

-I generally use the machine for heavy MS Office work...Web...and Photos. So, obviously the machine is more than adequate for this. My main question is which screen to get. I'd love to get the RGB, but will this be ok for what I am doing? Is the glare bad? Are there any drawbacks to the RGB?

-Are there competing machines I should be looking at and if so which ones? I love the XPS line, so stuff similar to that. I don't like the Inspiron line...to plasticy for me...

    Thanks in advance.

    :)

    -Compare the dimensions and weight.
-The glare can be distracting, but that wouldn't depend on panel technology. Drawbacks: the awesomeness takes a bit getting used to, which can cause some eye strain; price.
    -HP's dv6t, HP Envy 15, ASUS G50. The latter two are high-performance/gaming.

The dimensions are similiar except the 16 is an inch more in width. Im just not sure if I will "feel" that or not...

Also, I am a bit nervous about getting the RGB configured. Seems like it needs a lot of adjusting out of the box, no?

Ah....Well, I will say the width is slightly odd. It definitely takes getting used to, especially if you're used to more square-ish laptops.

IMHO, all that RGB calibration is perfectionistic. I looked at the RGBLED, was blown away, and haven't changed a thing since. :) Some people think the reds are too strong, it's too bright, etc. Most people (and this is a generalization) either need it calibrated perfectly because they edit pictures professionally or are just obsessed with making it conform to "set" standards of what red should be and what is too bright. I honestly didn't care.

More succinctly: there isn't a thing wrong with the RGBLED. All this "hoop-lah" about calibration is personal preference. It's a placebo effect, too. Now that someone else has a "better" display, you think yours needs correcting, too. The colors may be off, but unless you have sensitive eyes or demand absolute perfection, no need.

I mean, every HDTV in the world could be calibrated and many videophiles do have them calibrated. But most of us don't really notice. Some do, though, ergo giant thread on calibration.

I hear you. In that case I do think I would go RBG...and i'm not calibrating kind of guy.

What I more concerned with now is the width. I am used to 1530...which I consider "squarish" and I'm just not sure of the 16 will be "too big". I almost always use the machine in bed, resting on my chest.

if you intend to use it in bed, you may want to consider that the SXPS 16 heats up a lot if not on a hard, flat, well ventilated surface.

:) You'll be happy you did.

The wideness, IMO, does take getting used to. It almost makes it a bit of a balancing act on my skinny legs, lol. I wish I could describe it better, but I don't have one at the moment. :(

But, of course, it just takes a bit of time getting used to it, like most anything new or different.

I also have the xps m1530 & one of the things i love about it is the weight 5.8lbs. Can any of you confirm the weight of the studio xps 16 with the 15.6" screen? Dell's website claims around 6.5 lbs but i think that may be with the 16" screen since it orignally came out with the 16" screen. Can any of you confirm the weight with a 15.6" screen? If any of you has one and can put it on an actual weighing scale i'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

If you are only doing MS office work and music then you can use power saver while in your bed and it won't get warm really at all. Thought i would put that out there.
