I am looking to get an XPS 16 from Dell Canada. My main purpose for the laptop is to watch movies, blu-ray, and to plug into my HDTV. Here are the specs:

    Obsidian Black High Gloss Finish
    Intel ® Core ™ i7 720QM 1.6GHz (2.8 GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache)
Genuine Windows WIN 7® Home Premium Edition
    Microsoft Works, English
    McAfee SecurityCenter, 15-Months
1 Year Limited Warranty with 1 Year Return To Depot Service
Full HD Widescreen 16.0 inch RGBLED LCD (1920x1080) W/2.0 MP +$400
    4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz
    256GB Solid State Drive +$200
    ATI Mobility RADEON® HD 4670 – 1GB
Slot Load Blu-ray Disc (BD) Burner (Writes to DVD/CD/BD) +$250
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
    Intel® 5300 WLAN Wireless-N (3x3) Mini Card
High Definition Audio 2.0 with SRS Premium Sound

    Total Cost: $2349 CAD

I was thinking the SSD would help with the heat issues, since there are no moving parts.

Is this configuration overkill for my needs? Are there things you would add/remove to make it better? I'm all for any ideas to drop the price.

    Thanks for any help.

I would remove the SSD and upgrade the sound. SSD is only fast for loading times and cost to much at the moment. The upgraded sound would sound better when watching a movie with external speakers.

I think you should upgrade your waranty at some point to the 4 year complete care you have time to do so and well worth the 450 i paid (could be different for you)you have time but IMO its a good thing to have since your shelling out and the SSD will reduce heat(no moving parts ), and can withstand a drop from 3 stories high and still run Like nothing happened (demo on samsung Site) I have it and load times are quick but not just that everything i do is faster than a 7200 RPM might even hold its own against a 10,000 rpm which is great for games oh and also no noise for when you watch movies simply Awesome great for the price/size sure there are better but this is a great drive to get your foot in the door of the soon to be new standard but hey thats just my opinion.

Great configuration but I would call that order in (if you're not already doing so).

I have the same configuration without the BR drive ($250) and SSD ($200) and got it for $1689 (and I have the $40 leather option). Adding those options only gets me to $2139. Seems like you can shave a couple hundred off with a call to CSR.

Unless your total includes tax and, if so, ignore everthing I just said :)
