This discussion has been brought up a few times as many of us are very curious as to how well this machine performs when under load(furmark and Prime) on the newer equipped XPS with the ATI 5730 versus the previous 4670.

I thought I would make this thread so we can collect all of our findings in one single thread.

So, please post all relative information you guys have on the subject.

Can't wait to see some TS logs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS I will post my logs as soon as mine gets here.

Just ordered the XPS 16 and the guy on the phone pushed the 5730 over the other configuration (i5 w/ 4670)... small price difference, so I went with the i7 w/ 5730. When I get it I will definately add to this thread!

What do you need from furmark? a screen shot? I can load it and run it for you but cannot record more then 30sec on fraps.

edit: Never mind you asked for TS logs.

I can no longer download throttle stop from this thread. When I google it the links are questionable at best.

Yeah... So let me try to help you out here...

Download ThrottleStop and set the mult. to 13, and be sure to check mark the boxes for *Clock modulation *Chipset Clock Mod *Set Multiplier *Log Data *More Data

After you implement TS(be sure to be plugged into your 130 watt adapter) Start up furmark and let it run and get the system warm, 5-10 minutes or so, then implement Prime95 running small tft(the very first choice of them all) and let that run for another 5-10.

After this you can stop all processes and you will be left with a log file in your Throttle Stop folder.

Upload that log file and Folks here will help you out....

Ok Just over 10 minutes of testing and the results are in. I monitored furmark like a hawk and didnt see any stuttering or freezing. Temps did get warm, but still well within spec. Lowest FPS furmark got was 16 but averaged 24ish. The multiplyer stayed between 11.0 and 12.0 but averaged what seemed to be 11.5ish. Attached are my log and screen shot (took the SS well before I finished).

Edit: The GPU temps stay well below 70 for furmark only and once pegged and settled (~3-4mins in as I was just gaming not too long ago). I can safely say I am quite impressed with this rig.

Oh and pay no mind to the log pre 13:53:01 as that is all while idle/opening programs.

edit1: Oh and it seems I had bluetooth and wifi enable as well as my NIC so the heat values may be a little inflated (ambient temp is 78F)

I see the log is only a couple of minutes..... would you care to do it for longer? My 1645 wasn't throttling until it got really hot....

I let it go until the GPU temp does not raise anymore to know exactly what it will handle.....

The test total was 10 min and change. GPU temps stabilized 3-4min into fur, and the cpu temps were pegged for a few minutes before I canceled the benchmarks. Honestly where I am (work) there is not much else to see after 10+ minutes since the temps were pegged and stable. I can run a longer test but not while I am at work. The temps will be really inflated at home as the ambient temp will be well over 80 (25 year old ac unit).

I see... Yeah I dunno if you saw my other post, but I got my GPU up to 98* bye letting it test for a good 20-30 minutes or so... as if I were playing a game....

If you wouldn't mind a longer test that would be awesome : )

The log file shows that as soon as the load goes up to 100% that the throttling begins. The multiplier bouncing around between 11 and 12 isn't horrible like the first XPS 1645 that were shipped last year but it's still throttling and the CPU is running slower than Intel intended. Hopefully during real world gaming it doesn't sag any lower than the 11 multiplier.

I notice no lag or stuttering in furmark + prime95 or real world gaming + multitasking, so Im not worried at all. Plus 11-12/12 isnt bad IMHO. In fact its as close to perfect as I can see getting in the real world.

I do plan on doing a fresh install once I get my hands on a disc, I tried going through dell and they said to make a recovery disc myself. Im sure I could iron a few things out that way, but as of now the rig runs perfect in my book.
