Like many others here when i updated the Bios to V12, my battery would no longer charge with the notice that my AC was not seen by the computer- So after calling techs for assistance it was determined that the motherboard would need to be changed.
So the next day they were out to replace the MB, Which was completed and the battery would once again charge,. After the tech left i noticed that the machine was much slower then it was before- So now im thinking another bad MB. I check the system prop page to find i now only have 1gb of Ram- What did the tech forget to put the other 2 back in - I open the back there are are 2 sticks, a 1 and a 2, so i reseat the ram- again just 1gb- Hmmm- I switch them from slot to slot- Now it will not power up... Oh great bad ram stick... So i take it out- reboot- about 10 min later- the machine locks up... the harddrive is not being seen- what the F.... I remove the harddrive to find the connector to it is chipped off... Come on.....
I spend the next 10 hours working with an external connector tape and a lot of booze to get about 50% of my data recovered.
The next morning i call Dell- I tell them what happened- "Oh I am sorry for this to happen. I assure you it will be fixed and you will be very happy"
Right ...Ok... I escalate to a manager- I ask for a larger HDD to replace the damaged one i also ask for a Ram upgrade... I get the larger HDD- going from a 250 to a 500... and Dell sends a replacement 2gb... In the mean time i notice that there are bends in the metal trim- where the cover was pryed off.. So I call back to get another palm rest - oh and they were going to replacce my LCD back cover due to blisters in the paint... ( The first time they sent the wrong color... ( white instead of red)
2 days later- the new palm rest and second LCD assembly arrive- palm rest installed- the LCD is also installed- Wait a second- its now 1377 and not 1600x900..... You are kidding me right.... I call Dell again- they order a third LCD- then i notice that the sound is awefull.. left speaker not working at all, right is all muffled... Call Dell again- Order another palm rest..
Now all the while Im waiting for my call back from a senior manager to address my request for the Ram upgrade for the issues DELLs Techs have caused me..
Am i being overly demanding requesting the upgrades... Should I ask for more at this point.. Like a warranty extention- What should i expect?
Tech will be out again today with the new LCD and Palm rest- so will see-
what are others thoughts and exp in these cases?

I'm surprised they haven't offered to replace the system yet...
-
Yea, I'd be thinking "replacement time" as well. You're definitely doing a good thing by asking for the upgrades, as I would do the same myself. If you still have troubles after the most recent repair, either tell them you don't want the laptop anymore (hinting at a replacement to 1647 or 1645) or ask for another fix and go for a warranty extension. We shall see how the next repair works out. Good Luck.

I always got resistance from the requesting upgrade route.
Then, almost out of the blue, I was offered a 1645 as a replacement for my 1340. Not much of an "upgrade" as I bought the smaller, better battery life computer for a reason, but it did turn out to be a nicer overall computer.... until IT broke several times in a few days. -
Well TECH just came out and left- guess what- Windows will not load- I asked the tech to stay and make sure it was all ok. it started in Start up repair mode- after 30 min- ( tech would not stay) Came back and said the errors were not repairable- ...happened- Im supposed to get a call from escalations today, Im asking for a replacement- This 1640 is 3 months old.
Gezzz. Im reinstalling windows ( again) -
well reinstalled Win7- LOL DELL sent me a 1920x1080 which will take some getting used to - i did have 1920x1200 on my old inspiron 6000, so it wont be that much of an issue.
I still think 1600x900 is the best on a 15.6 inch
manger never called like they were supposed to ... -
Crap- backlight Keyboard not working- reinstalled quickset - nothing
ARGGGGG -
Replacement order just placed- now i hope i get all the items that I upgraded-
I upgraded the CPU from 8400- to t9800, the optical drive from dvdrw to blu-ray.
I have asked for a 1647, with i7, as that is closest to what i have in the t9800.
also i made it clear that it needs to be the same in every way,

Well done and congrats. I hope it works out and you get that 1647, as that is probably the most stable of the XPS 16XXs out right now. Your troubles were starting to sound like a soap opera
, one unexpected development after another. Good luck and keep us posted.

Raether, did you call in or use Dell Chat? Congrats too!
-
Dell Chat- talking to india is painfull. I did not even push for the replacement- the tech just said- instead of continuing to trouble shoot this system - I suggest we opt for a new system-
So there you go...
