I have been checking the Dell XPS 16 shop daily for the past month and today noticed the removal of the i7-620M option on all four possible configurations.

On the higher end of the spectrum you have the i7-740QM but then it drops to the i5-540.

It's gone! Anyone know what happened? Is something newer coming out? As far as I am aware, this was the fastest dual core out there for laptops. All the newer ones use less power but are slower ...

All the dual-cores are spec'd for the same amount of power, 35W.

The 640 is the fastest dual core, but I don't think Dell ever offered it.

The 620 comes and goes on the website. They may be having a supply shortage. Try back in a week or two and it'll be back.

    Hi,

I just got XPS Studio 16 replacement for the overheating XPS M1530, and it spec with the i7-620M oddly.

I was expecting the i7-720 instead.

Lucky devil ... The dual cores are still the better option I believe. Faster clock speeds, lower price, lower power, lower heat and better all round performance for single threaded applications.

    Hi,

I was fine with the XPS M1530 as it working for about a year and a half, and then it started to overheat. I contacted Dell suport and tired several motherboard replacements over a period several months. Each replacement helped for about one month before the issue reappeared.

    Hi,

As an update, I got my XPS Studio with the 620 CPU, however, the refurbished system had the left top of the metal bottom partially unscrewed. There is a 1/3 centimeter gap from the metal bottom and plastic top. I also found some hair on my screen. In additional, the screen I got was a down grade. It was originally Full High Definition, but this replacement is 1600X900, and I was given a slower 5400RPM Hard Drive while my XPS M1530 had 7200RPM. The system was returned back to Dell, and I am getting a another replacement.

Does the 720QM overheat in the XPS 16? If not, why choose the 620M?

I will jump in here with a few reasons.
    1. The 620M only uses less power. Implies the dual core will last quite a bit longer when running on battery.
    2. The 620M will give you faster latent clock speed. Meaning games will run better.
    3. It runs cooler. Less chance of throttling issues though it does not eliminate completely.
    4. The 620M is supplied with a 90W AC adapter. The quad cores come with a 130W AC adapter. Some have advised that this is substantially larger. For me, this implies less portability.

I would have loved to have purchased the i7-620M but Dell were dangling a very cheap quad core carrot and I simply couldn't resist.

Oh, I thought the XPS 16's throttling issues had been fixed.

I am afraid not. Frequency is less but apparently still there.

Was/is i7-620M offered in Canada? So far from what I see, it seems to be fastest processor (except for 840QM on Turbo boost).

Also does new 1647 with dual core processors suffer from throttling?

Just call Dell and ask for a 130W if you have the i7-620m. Tell them it throttles on the 90W. Mine throttled with the 90W, so one phone call and they sent out 130W.

I have been frequently visiting the Canada site and I have to admit, did not see the i7-620M offered.

In Australia it was offered up to a few weeks ago. It disappeared and I was hoping it would come back.

Truth be told, I hope they come back with the i7-640M. Not that I can buy it now but for all those others out there.

If you follow cook99's advice, you will score the 130W adapter for free which will help if the laptop does throttle. All dual cores seem to ship with the 90W, the quad's come with the 130W.

Not exactly free because you'd have to send back your old one. Why would you keep the 90w anyways?

Spare I thought? Still usable if not pushing the laptop isn't it? And I had heard that some people got to keep and didn't have to send back.

I use one AC adapter on my desk; the other is kept in the bag. Saves me a bit of rummaging around.

Yeah mine wasn't free, they made me send the 90W back, but as Anodize said, I didn't want it anyway - caused throttling. I agree having 2 is sweet, lucky I had a 130W already from a previous life, so now i have 2x130W :)

No longer offered in Australia ... even on the studio lines and no longer offered in India ...

I just hope its because Dell are rolling out the i7-640M.

Just some news from the Australian front. The i7-620 is now back and they are offering the Windows 7 OS CD as an optional extra (but at no additional cost). The quad core option is no longer even available.

That grates me ... About the OS CD that is.
