I purchased two XPS 1640 laptops with build dates the end of March 2009.
Recently I discovered that the DVD drives in both of them have failed. When I insert a DVD (movie, data or software) I hear a loud clicking noise and then the DVD ejects.
Since these laptops are used by my wife and son I don't know exactly when they failed but I know that I installed software on one of the first part of May and things were fine.
I was on the phone with Dell Tech Support who attempted to fix the problem but, they were unable to.
Good news is that Dell is sending out new drives to be installed next week.
Bad news is that I am concerned what else might be wrong.
Has anybody encountered this problem of have a suggestion as to what might be going on?
Could this be related to heat?
I have a warranty until 2011 so that is good.

I have a feeling they just released some new drivers which fix that problem

My DVD drive just failed too. I get a loud clicking noise every time I insert a cd. I am about to call dell and see if I can get a replacement. I wonder how ward it will be to swap it out.

What model drives are failing? If you don't know, you can check device manager and find out...just curious

OK...mine started to act up like two weeks ago. When I would boot up I would here a clicking noise and if I inserted a disk I would get the same thing but the drive was working and passed all tests Dell requested. Then today I noticed the clicking on boot up stopped but now inserting a DVD causes lots of clicking and an ejected disk. I tired downloading the latest firmware but that did nothing. For reference I have a PLDS DVD+-RW DL-8ATS ATA.
