I did a search and found a couple threads but didn't see any fixes. I just received a 1645 w/ 720QM processor and 128GB SSD. Even when my laptop is idle it makes a high pitched noise on and off continuously. Is there a fix for this? It's driving me nuts. I have the latest A08 bios.
It seems to be the hard drive or CPU. When running a HDD benchmark the noise changes immediately to a more intense pattern. It's not very loud but when the room is silent I can easily hear it.

I would call Dell or do a tech chat. As far as I know, SSDs do not have any moving parts so I don't know what would be making the noise. Maybe the wiring or something?

true. there are no moving parts in a SSD. i dont think it is the SSD which is making the noise. so, the only moving part left out is the heat sink Fan, which rotates constantly, unless there is any CD/DVD in the CD drive. check if there are any BIOS updates available. else, contact Tech support team.

I think my ears are ultra sensitive. I did some searches in Google and found Intel SSD owners mentioning something similar.

I think it is your CPU. There are some electrical components, that make this "whine". This is because of the sleep states of the CPU (Especially the C4 deeper sleep state). It changes its clock maaaany times a second which has the effect of some fast heat changes in some components. This causes the high pitched noise. As far as I have heard almost all Intel-based Laptops (Up from Core Duo) have this issue. Only many people aren't able to hear that sound anymore, because you really need some sensitive ears. (Loud music and growing age impair your ears)
My SXPS1645 has it too and my former Precision M90 had it. And every newer laptop of my friends based on an Intel processor has that issue.
What can you do? Basically nothing. If the manufacturers would have build in some more expensive components of higher quality, this probably would not happen. Must be some capacitor or some inductor for voltage control.
But there was a time you could eliminate this through disabling the advanced sleep states of your CPU with Rightmark CPU_Clock. Bus this tool does not support Core iX CPUs and development has stopped I think.
But it worked. I had it running on my old M90. You could start the tool, hear the noise, push start and the noise is gone. If you stopped the tool, it was back again.
Result was, that your CPU consumed like 3-4W more than usually. -
XPS 1645 - SSD high pitched noise, is there a fix?
