Hi,
I'm currently deciding whether to buy the XPS 1645, 6GB RAM, i7, 500GB model of the XPS.
Or a refurbished MBP for the same price. (The one with 256MB DDR3 VRAM)
My main focus is video editing in HD. I've been using Windows 7 and OSX so am familiar with both systems.
What it comes down too right now is the build quality and the potential out of both machines.
I've read numerous reports of "Heat" problems from the XPS1645 which kinda scares me from buying it, however the 1080p and i7 kinda interest me.
And help on deciding between the two would be greatly appreciated.

for video editing in HD ... no brainer you will really like the i7 for encoding !!!!
both are a quality system but the MBP is sorely lacking in CPU and GPU ( if you use gpu accelerated software ) -

havnt used one myself but I hear they arent too bad at the pad. but if you are doing serious editing work why arent you using a mouse, digitizer or touch tablet?

cant say, hopefully someone who owns one can jump in here.. I hate to pass on third hand knowledge.

Its fine. the touchpad on the 1645 doesn't get beyond warm for me even when gaming

Same here... Not to bad at all. The "Heat" problems are most likely from the XPS1640 that you are hearing about.

Macbook Pros also run incredibly hot. The whole block of AL acts as one big heatsink that dumps the heat from the computer onto the user.
