Trying to decide between the 1647 and the 1558 - obviously, the 1558 is substantially cheaper.

    Common spec -
    • i5 520m [might upgrade to the 540m]
    • 4gb DDR3 1333MHz
    • Backlit keyboard
    • Intel 6200 wireless
    • 500GB hard drive
    • 9-cell battery
    • 1920x1080 WLED

    The differences I've noted -
    • ATI HD 4570 vs ATI HD 4670
    • 5400rpm vs 7200rpm hard drive - I've asked if that can be upgraded
    • "Edge-to-edge" screen - how much difference does this make?
    • Appearance of the machine, obviously

Have I missed anything? I've not found enough so far to justify the price difference.

    Thanks!

Supposedly the XPS should be better build quality..but it's not.
    1) Speaker rattle
    2) Random hardware crashes
    3) Downthrottling of i7 CPUs

    etc..
The 4670 is a LOT faster than the 4570 though (2x, at least).
I also prefer 7200 rpm HDDs in laptops because HDD are usually the bottleneck in laptops

I've wonder about the same thing. XPS vs Studio.

I like the Studio for the fact I can choose a design cover (i.e.: Product Red design). I like XPS for the fact it offers more than 4GB RAM option and slot drive.

I prefer the Studio cover over XPS, but XPS interior looks better.

The Studio line can have 4GB of RAM and has a slot drive. ;)

That's the thing. Only 4GB as an option, no more than 4. Also Studio, i5-520m, nothing higher. Bummer. I really like the back design of Studio though.

The way things developing right now, I don't think there'd be any point in buying any core i7 modell, since even the less consuming i7 620M is reported throtteling.

I don't now anything about the core i5 CPUs, but those can be powerfull as well, depends on what you'd like to throw at it, and definately an option if it dosen't experience the throttling issue.

I'm also hesitating about the Studio line, though I really like the XPS's GPU a lot more.

I have 3 months time - waiting for reports on the i5 540M behaviour - but if it weren't so, I'd bought HP or something else.
