Can someone post their BIOS version, if a 90 or 130 watts adapter is used and system configurations here and let us know if they are still experiencing throttling?

Clean your processor and gpu then apply some AS5. Buy a cooler such as the Zalman NC2000 and use your laptop with a 130w adapter and you will not see anymore throttling. At least that worked for my past 4 XPS 1645's. The 1647 is less likely to throttle than the 1645. Did you get Dell to agree to send you a new 1647?

what the heck O-o 4 1645. If they were all replacements, then Dell is mighty generous. Best warranty EVER.

Nope. 4 XPS not including my current replacement system. All of my family member has their own XPS. They don't care nor do they know about XPS issues so I'm the only one replacing my system. I haven't experienced "best warranty" like some others have. I can't even get a replacement system of equal value as my original one.

just think of it in a good light. At least Dell, unlike most other companies, is willing to replace the systems. Upscale brands such as Apple and Sony rarely replace anything.

Agreed completely. Even HP. Dell offers amazing services and sad to see some people abuse their policy hardcore(like going from a 2-3 yr old lower end model to a nearly maxed XPS) and still express dissatisfaction like "I would never buy another Dell."

But it's not their fault. No one wants a lemon for a price of $900 or more. No one would ask for any replacement if the notebook gives a performance matching its price. The fact is that xps 16 series is a defective line of notebook having serious issues of throttling and overheating that negates the utility of a quad-core processor. And by the way, many of the customers are getting a high end model as replacement either because the parts put into their systems are not manufactured now or are found to be faulty. For example, if a person has a xps with an RGB LED display but a core 2 duo processor and suppose he is getting a replacement with a WLED display (as Dell has stopped selling the RGB LED in most of the countries), then it is his right to get a core i7 processor. Also, as you can find in many of the threads the customer service of Dell is getting worse and their is an ever increasing number of people who have to go through a lot of mental stress, discomfort and loss of precious time to get their FAULTY system replaced.

daredevil, that's naive. There ARE people who ask for a replacement for one reason, to make a profit. Those guys ask for a replacement even if their system is perfect and steal parts off a replacement or demand better spec by making up issues. I've seen a guy here who was given a nearly maxed out 1645 for his refurbished Studio while I can't even get something of equal value for my defective 1645. I couldn't even think of asking for a brand new replacement for my defective 1645 until a few days ago.

    COUGH * overvu * COUGH

Yea but its people like that who make the exchange process harder for others. The person who i am refering to had a 700$ refurb 1645 and got 3 system replacements and now has a fully maxed out 1645 with :
    Core i7 840qm
    5730
    8gb ram
    256 gb ssd
    RGBled
    6250 wimax

Damn, well I really want a XPS 16(47) because few or none other laptops on sale have a high end i5 with HD 5730 or better and a good 15.6 inch screen
    (Can't purchase a Sager/Clevo locally here).

    And really isn't a 1647 = 1645 in specs? What's the diff?

I've had 2 Dell laptops (Latitude: Pentium M , XPSMxxx: Core2D), both about <14 inches, and just bought a Dell Desktop (Core i3).

I think Dell's products and services are fair. I used the old Latitude for 5 years, so it's impossible to say I didn't have any complaints after the first couple years, but overall it was pretty damn good. Plus, it was Really Weird that the new desktop I bought over the weekend had an unplugged DVD drive and a totally non-functional ATI HD 5450, but I called them and told them when I was free, and they replaced it and fixed it immediately.

Recently bought another brand of laptop (to replace my 5 year old Latitude) 8 months ago. It has i7-720QM, GT 240M, 15.6 inch 1366x768, 4GB DDR3. Weird thing is, while the Windows Exp Index gives 7.3 for RAM, it is slow as shiit. Plus, it has a host of problems with it - and it is also a replacement unit of the same model.

Anyway, ~1 month ago they offered a replacement for it which had almost the same specs but with 6GB DDR3 and HD 5730 instead. This would seem like a good offer, if only I was not fed up with that line of lappies. Now waiting for refund (which they agreed to) and pondering my next purchase.

What really pissed me off is that I waited so long before buying this lappy (checking out all kinds over the internet, reading reviews etc), and yet it was broken, and the replacement was also broken. Hell, the people who gave it reviews must have had some really good luck... it's just like the XPS 16, 1/2 the people have a great one, 1/2 have a shiitty one.

Hoping that when I do get the XPS 16 (maybe when it has >5730 or when something new pops up, or when I get my refund) it won't be like this.

At least he started with a 1645 originally. He just got lucky because they sent him a non-RGB model and he ended up replacing that with his own RGB after getting all the upgrades.

There was another person who stole parts off replacement systems in multiple occasions and tried to make a profit by replacing his laptop almost every week hoping to receive a maxed out version. He started with a used refurbished Studio 15 from CL, IIRC. That guy is banned.

Of course, there are people who are mean by nature but don't you find it interesting that Dell even fails to notice the stealing of parts and provide them replacement without much investigation. On the other hand people like you fail to get a replacement although your case is genuine one. This itself is the proof that the service and support section of Dell is not performing its duty well. By the way, you don't HAVE TO THINK of asking for a replacement, you HAVE TO FIGHT FOR IT because you have paid for it.

You got lucky then. Alot of us have to FIGHT for it. It took 9 tech visits before they finally approved my 1640 to be replaced. The system was so worn from dumb tech's it was ridiculous. And people who abuse the system make it so much harder for people to get replacements who actually deserve it

+1, don't abuse the system. But with that said, I think Dell abused us with the horrible quality control/design on the s xps 16... Just my opinion and you know what people say about those....

I wouldn't say dell has horrible quality control its hit and miss. Ive had 3 dell systems. Before this one and i've never had a problem and they still work and 1 is even 7 years old. Ive owned a toshiba and it was the worst POS i have ever owned. Every company has they're lemons. And when dell screws up they eventually rectify the mistake.

Get a 1645 with the following: 5730, i7 quad, WLED, 130watt ac adapter. No throttling and no issues.

Dell should be ashamed, they canceled my brand new replacement that was in production ( after waiting 20 effin days ), now they are making me a new setup with no bluetooth, and no leather, they also downgraded my video card and processor. I called Hell support and they said they have they right to give me whatever they want, really why are you guys defending Dell they play the same games and screw their customers over. heres the specs for my replacment that they canceled.

The best suggestion is to call Dell and, due to the throttling, request a 130W adapter. The next best thing is to get a 130w 1640/45/47 adapter from ebay.

You flip your adapter. You memorize the part# that says on the adapter. You go to google.com and do a quick search. You now know.
