    Hey,

i've ordered a L702x a couple of months ago, and I figured that a cooling pad would be nice to prevent overheating from the start. So I ordered like 3 different Zalman Coolers (the latest models) which generally got nice reviews on amazon.

But none of these worked for me. There wasn't even a drop of 1°!!! So I had to send them all back.

Now, a couple of months later, the CPU gets really hot, like 95°C after 10 min. of stresstest, when the automatic CPU overclocking is enabled (I usually run the CPU at 70% of its max speed without turboboost enabled)

So I said to myself, let's try another cooler, maybe I'll get lucky. So I ordered the Notepal U3, anotherone that gets generally good reviews and has also been recommended a lot of times on ths forum. It has the 3 positionable fans which I thought would solve the problem

Well, what can I say? I'm using it right now. The L702x has 3 "vents" on the bottom, one of which is used by the internal fan. So I positioned the 3 external fans of the coolermaster directly under these 3 vents. The funny thing is, the coolermaster u3 even increses the heat by 2°C!!! During my stresstest with aida64, without the coolermaster the temp rose up to 90°C. When I started the coolermaster the temps rose to 92/3°C. A soon as I turned that thing of, the temps lowered to 90°C again. --> ?

I can't believe it!! Other people are reporting massive droßs of up to 15°C with this thing, so why are no cooling pads working for me?!

    Greetz,

    Thx for your reply!

Well that one is not available on Amazon in Germany. Moreover, why should this one work better? I have the fans directly where the vents are. More cooling precicion is not possible. Is this thing more powerful?

Is there anybody wh is using the notepal with xps 17 and having success with it? Maybe I'm doing sth. wrong? Where do I have to place the fans to have a cooling effect?

    EDIT: Watch:

Countless people giving positive reviews while using Dell Laptops, some of them mentioning XPS 17!!! How do I have to set this thing up to get it to cool properly?

It could be that the laptop is well cooled to start with, and it makes no sense - no benefit - to use a laptop cooler?

I've never understood these gadgets. My L702x, quite overclocked, goes through hours long playing sessions without a problem, GPU temp never exceeding 70C. So what's the use of one of these? Seems like useless gimmicks to me.

    Have you repasted or something?

The stresstest pushes my CPU to over 90°C. So at least mine is not cooled perfectly. I'd just like to increase its life span. The GPU is just fine, even overclocked that's true.

Can Anyone tell me how I can clean this thing if it is dusty? I don't want to dismantle it all.

EDIT: If I disable the turbo Boost (setting CPU perlformance to 99%) it runs relatively stable on 74/5°C when I set it to full speed, it immediately reaches 90-95°C

I have been using different coolers for years and have given up. I really think they are just another thing to help us waste our money. Make sure the vents aren't blocked and you should be fine. If you are overheating, maybe you should either let dell deal with it or replace the thermal paste on the CPU. The best cooling I ever found was when i had an HP that would overheat and shut down after a few hours of game play was a battery operated foam bladed fan I sat behind it blowing straight into the vents. I think the little fan was like 5 dollars. That is one thing i really like about the L702X with the 9 cell battery, so it is propped up and the vents get plenty of air.

Haha, I might have used the same fan as you with my old inspiron ;). The thing is that the L702x has its vents on the bottom, while the inspiron had two rear vents, so that's not an option anymore.

Really funny how a 5€/$ vent can do more than cooling pads for over 50€. Thevent was even usb powered!! XD

Well, I guess I'll send the Notepal u3 back.

I'd love to repaste, but I have never done tis before. Never dismantled any notebook and never repasted any CPU or GPU. I'm afraid I'll end up using too much or too less paste or something... Also, what about the warranty? Wouldn't I loose it after repasting?

I can't imagine it would cost that much to have a tech do it. I haven't done any temp checks, but even with Skyrim running, this is the coolest laptop I have owned. Maybe it is time to download something to check temps.

See what you've done, now I am paranoid lol.

Well, it's not useless at all. The laptop coolerpad is essential for last generation Dell Laptops, expesialy for machines like XPS 17. Dell is popular with the bad and cheap cooling system, even on the most expensive models. If you are using your laptop for gaming, video montages and converting, etc. the laptop reduce the overload on the processor and on the video card to prevent the notebook to burn.
