I've had my XPS for three years and the battery's been fine. I was using it yesterday and suddenly it powers off. I restart and get a battery error message which prompts me to press F1 to continue. I do and find that the battery light on the front panel starts blinking orange like crazy. I see an error that says something like:
"your battery has experienced a permanent failure and needs to be replaced"
Or course I'd prefer not to have to buy a new battery so I found a suggestion to remove the battery and hold down the power button for 20 seconds to reset the battery settings. I'll try that when I get home.
So my questions:
Thank you for reading this,
- Any other suggestions to salvage the battery?
- If worse comes to worse and I do have to purchase a new battery do you guys suggest doing so through Dell, or are there other recommended sites?

Three years is pretty good time for a replacement if you have been using the laptop almost every day. I would highly recommend buying ORIGINAL Dell battery because of compatibility issues, but not necessarily from Dell as they will charge more. I recently bought an aftermarket battery for my sister's Inspiron from Amazon, and it was trash. Upon booting up, I received "battery is unidentified" and the battery does not charge. Bought an OEM Dell battery from Amazon, and it worked perfectly. Give eBay a try as well. Make sure it is OEM or ORIGINAL. It is a hit and miss with aftermarket batteries.

I would just bite the bullet and buy a new one from Dell if they're still available.
