I have a question, I purchased my XPS before the 2nd generation CPUs came out, I have a i7 2820QM CPU.

Anyhow with respect to Optimus was this feature always available with the XPS 17 3D?

Because I don't seem to have it on my laptop and I don't see anything in my BIOS (A16) that suggests I do. I know when I tried to install the Intel driver it says my system isn't compatible.

I just find it odd that's all. :(

    Thanks
    Andrew

My understanding is the 3D model does not have optimus.

So only the newer 2nd generation models have it I guess?

I see from Dell's build site that all their GT 555M configurations come with the Optimus, I am looking at Dell.ca under business laptops and the XPS 17 3D.

Your best bet to make sure is call Dell or email them.

When I hooked up a HDMI cable to my Panasonic Viera plasma 50" 1080p TV I noticed that the screen is larger than the TV. I tried to adjust the TV but nothing I did either on my computer with the Nvidia driver or the TV fixed it.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

The L702X 3D (2nd gen i7 CPU) don't support optimus either. Non 3D models do.

As for your tv, hdmi is the way you want to connect it. After connecting it try changing the screen resolution.

So the question now is why would I need to adjust the resolution if my TV already supports 1080p?

I wonder if there is a problem with the video to HDMI driver not sure if it's Nvidia or Dell who causing the problem here?

I havnt connected mine via hdmi yet, ill give it a try and see if I get the same problems.

Out of intrest you don't have it set to extend your desktop onto the 2nd display do you?

ok i have just had a play with HDMI on my 47" tv.

When first connected up i get the same problems as you, the screen is to big for the tv and you loose a bit around the edge.

the only way i was able to fix this was to change the settings from duplicating my desktop onto both displays to showing my desktop only on the 2nd display. Once it is shown on the second display you can then access the adjusting controls in nvidia control panel to lower the screen resolution slightly so that you can see the whole desktop.

i know this is not a solution as it shouldnt have to be done but its the best i could work out.

So were did you make this change? Because in the Nvidia control panel I couldn't see away to make the 2nd display (my tv) the only display.

right click on your desktop and click screen resolution. in here is where you need to change it from duplicate to use 2nd display.

then when viewing it only on your tv, go into the nvidia control panel and the option to adjust the screen will be available. after you have adjusted it and saved it, the next time you connect and change to 2nd display only it will remember the resolution you have set
