Just noticed that L702x only allow up to 16GB if you take a 3D graphics card.... the documentation shows 4 memory slots....
Does anyone have a definitive answer on this?
I was hoping to get the 4gb base memory and get 16gig from crucial for £140 rather than £500 from dell......
Thanks in advance.

I'm looking at the edit page right now, and I think you misunderstood:
Its not a 3D graphics card, its a 3 GB graphics card.
I'm guessing to use the 16 GB effectively, you need a 3Gb graphics card, but I might be mistaken.
The four slots are still going to be there, whether they work is a different story
I'm considering getting the 6GB base, and the 3GB graphics just in case, then ordering 12 GB from newegg for about $40 a stick.
And Just so you know, the 4GB base is, more likely than not, just two 2GB. And at crucial, 16GB is about 180, unless Im missing out on some discountt -
I was planning on ripping out the dell memory completely and replacing with the new crucial memory.
Are you looking at the US version of the crucial website? $180 or £180 ? -
I think you need to order the 3d screen to get the 4 ram slots. If you get the regular screen then they take out two of them (even though there's no reason to). But then who needs 16gb of ram anyway? Most things only require 4gb.
And Jarwain, there's two options for each card (one with 3d + one without). And lots of ram would require a better processor rather then a graphics card. -
You answered your own question most things...
Well I for one do need 16 GB, so rest assured there are several people who do. -
16GB to run sql server, visual studio and vm's, I'm a developer. I was looking at the m6500 but they are way too expensive especially considering the 2720 out performs the 940 processor!
-
Not to sound like an a$$ but what on the earth could you need 16 gigs of RAM for. Honestly I think after 8 the cpu would be the bottleneck
-
That doesn't seem to likely with these second generation sandy bridge CPU's
Developing makes use of 16GB, so does video editing and 3D modeling/animation. Besides, you can never go wrong with more Ram
I was looking at the US site, so theres the conversion rate i forgot about. xD
And thats odd, the only graphics cards options i see are 1 GB, 3GB, and same + TV tuner -
Thanks for the replies, I may hang on until people who ordered without 3d get their laptops so they can verify first, I have no interest in playing games on this thing so the 3gig card is completely pointless to me.
I'd just like to make sure that it has 4 memory slots so I can put 16gigs of ram in.
Still cant believe they want £500 for it... its shocking! -
Just noticed to get the 16gig option not only do you need to upgrade the video card to the 3D 3G GT 555 but you also need to go for the FHD screen upgrade, a few people on these forums have said this 1080 screen can suck for text.... not good!
-
4 ram slots is only for 3D screen. For gpu not sure. But soon is expected to start shiping 8 gb ram on stick.2 x 8=16 But in the first time this stick will be hell of expensive. But in the future price will drop down.I can afford to wait for people who need 16 gb ram now 3D is only options.

I've just spoken to dell, they've confirmed that the base model does indeed have 4 slots.
I'm going to go ahead with:
i7-2720QM
17.3" HD+ WLED True-Life (1600x900) with 2.0 Mega Pixel
1GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 550M Graphics Card
4096MB (2x2GB) 1333MHz DDR3 Dual Channel
640GB (7,200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive
Backlit UK/Irish Qwerty Keyboard
4Yr Next Day Hardware Support
Comes in at 1273 - 10% = £1145
I'll then upgrade the ram to 16gigs (via crucial £140)
And then put a SSD drive in!
Should be excellent for my needs.
I've also asked them to put on the order that should the machine be provided with only 2 slots I will be returning the system and they are happy to do this! -
Select any XPS 17 and go into the configurator. (US Website)
Over on the right side, under the picture of the laptop, is a link for "Technical specs"
Click that, then go to the technical specs tab.
XPS 17 supports up to 16 GB of RAM so long as you have an i7 processor, regardless of whether you get 3D or the graphics card upgrade.
16 GB seems overkill, but the slots are there if you want 'em. -
Is that the UK site or US?
-
-
I was talking to a dell tech supervisor and he confirmed that you need both an i7 and 3gb video card in order to use 12GB or 16GB of ram on the xps 17 (3D).

Cheers! -
When I ordered mine - 2630QM, 6GB, GT555M non-3D 900p.. there was an option for 16GB.
It's turning up tomorrow.. so I'll take the panel off and let everyone know. -
I have some pictures posted in this thread ( here & here) that show I only have 2 slots available on my XPS 17 L702x. See my signature for spec.
I would agree with mkj here. If you have ordered a 900p (non-3D) model I would be doubtful you'll have any more than 2 slots, no matter what Dell reps tell you. -
This just won't be solved until people start getting their L702x's in hand. Joxercore is the first and only to say 2 slot, although motherboards on the L701x's show that 4 slots have been put out there. I will definately be keeping a tally until mine arrives, if ever. I ordered the 2820 though, so I am still holding out hope, since the 2630 doesn't support optimus or widi evidently for some other unknown reason.
-
I heard that the 2630QM will work with widi.. just that intel can't fully certify it under all conditions. With optimus.. i've also heard a rumour that it won't work with the 2630 but haven't seen any evidence to back this up. I hope it doesn't work with optimus! :-D
With the ram slots.. I definitely had the 16GB option for mine and it was non-3D. Maybe there's different versions of the motherboard depending on where / when you ordered. Will update everyone tomorrow when I have it in my hands -
-
Mine will be here Friday, so hopefully I have good news.
-
Actually, I haven't seen if the xps 17 will be able to handle 8GB of ram in a single dimm. Where can you find that out?
-
Spoke to dell technical support this morning and a guy looked into my order in great detail - ie the motherboard etc... its a non-3d ordered on 11/03/2011 and could see in front of him it had 4 dimm slots so hopefully all good!!!
-
My L702X arrived yesterday, 2630, non-3D screen, GT555m...
Only 2 DIMM slots. Wires cover the other 2 slots so you can't use them at all. -
If you configure a 3D laptop with an I5 and select 12GB or 16GB of RAM it says----"Errors:
The Memory selection of 12GB or 16GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 Memory requires a Intel® Core™i7-2630QM or higher Processor with a NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 555M 3GB graphics card . Please update the selection as needed"
Sadly I'm not sure this proves the 900p will have 4 slots. -
i'm from holland and i bought the 2630qm with gt550m 1gb, with 1080p32D. I orderder way at the beginning when everything looked possible. now the sites and selection choices have changed and it looks like there are only 4 dimms if you have
3D 1080P
AND GT555M
only with the above selected on the I7 2630 Mobo you have the option for 16 GB ram, otherwise the option is not given....
i'm still hoping that mine will have 4 dimms but i'm being realistic about it and will be suprised when it has
(sorry for the poor english

atulthakor, are you in the us?
either way, I'll have the update by tomorrow afternoon. -
I just received and opened xps17, I7, 2720QM, 8GB, 555m 3GB, 900P. I'm sorry to report there is only 2 slots.

Just spoken to a technical team leader called Jason and one of his colleagues Richard. They have spoken to the product team and 100% confirmed you only get 4 slots if you get the 1080 screen and 3GB graphics card.
Cant believe how much dell have messed people around... will be calling shortly to cancel -
-
As usual, Dell's technical info page and Dell's chat (both of which confirmed that these machines would have four slots) were just flat wrong.
Oh well...that mistake is going to cost Dell a lot of money (paying for the returns, no restocking fees, probably selling them at a discount at the outlet, building and sending me new machines). -
I just posted a hopeful update over at the NEW UPDATE on 4Dimms for the L1702x thread. I'm determined to get to the bottom of this.
