We won't have to worry about it much when Apple goes full ARM and there's no more dGPU onboard. Unless they create a discrete GPU, but I doubt they would be doing that, perhaps maybe. Be interesting. They already have an 8-core GPU on the A12Z, I'm sure they could pull it out into it's own chip and scale it if they wanted to.

I don't see how they are going to keep the content creators happy with that though unless they still support eGPU with Thunderbolt, which they stated they are going to keep supporting. Wonder if AMD provided code or is going to help Apple write ARM drivers for eGPUs if so.

Dell XPS and competing manufacturers will take a lot of business from Apple if their GPU game is weak on the Pro line.

The Radeon stuff isn't bad for content creation, I'm interested to see what they end up doing in the next year or so for the MacBook Pros though if they really are going ARM across the entire line (except maybe mac pro)

From what I am reading it will be more than a year before the entire line is moved to apple silicon. I am just hoping the rumour is true of a 2 in 1 Macbook pro. A few different apple based reporters are claiming they are here soon.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "The Radeon stuff is not bad for content creation"? Are you referring to performance on GPU-accelerated content creation tasks? How do the Radeon models in Applebooks fare in terms of the amount of VRAM?

The 5500M is available with 4 or 8 GB of GDDR6. The upgraded 5600M comes with 8 GB of HBM 2 VRAM, which is a configuration unique to the MacBook Pro. Performance wise, the 5600M is a bit faster than the RTX 2060, but it's much more power efficient. IIRC, it caps out at around 60W versus 80-90 for most version of the NVIDIA card.

Do you mind me asking... by any chance did you have an XPS 15 before?

I've had my XPS 15 about three years, and absolutely love it. I was thinking about getting the new XPS 17, but was wondering how much bigger it is than my old 15 (not the new 15)?

I had the XPS 15 7590 as well as the prior generation. This honestly feels like a 15-inch notebook.

    Thanks, appreciate the quick reply.

Yeah, everything I've read says the 17 is barely bigger than the older 15. I wouldn't mind a larger screen. How do you find text sizes display, are they much different on that 4K screen (which I would also get).

If you had no problems with the sizes on the 15-inch 4K panels, you won't have a problem with this. I didn't have to adjust anything.

You can adjust font sizes if you need to, but it works just fine for me. I do have good eyes, but I don't consider the appearance of anything to be especially small. It's the best display I've seen on a laptop.

It randomly stopped producing audio. Everything else has been minor, but this bothers me. I'm on the phone with Dell now. Edited to add: The issue has been resolved.

Yes, I did that and installed like three Windows updates. It's back. I hope it stays this way.

Edited to add: Believe it or not, it's gone again. They assured me they'd fix last time.

They have acknowledged it makes no sense for me to pay $3,500 for a computer that stops producing or recording audio three times in two days out of four days of ownership. I agree. I have a direct email for when this problem recurs now.

Weird, I think it's a hardware problem and this point. Rma and get another device. Mine went and after doing some driver updates it was all good.

New to the forum. I just opened my new XPS 17 9700 and looked over the laptop very carefully before powering it on. I first noticed a tiny dot that looked like a spec of dust. After trying to rub it out with a microfibre cloth and being unable to do so, I looked more closely and noticed about 10 of the same dots on the same horizontal line, spaced about one inch apart and about 2 inches from the bottom of the screen. Has anyone else noticed this on their XPS 17? I have the 4K touchscreen.

That definitely sounds like the touch screen assembly if it's that equally spaced. Outside chance of dead/stuck pixels but sounds too uniform the way you explain it.

EDIT: I seem to recall seeing something similar on my old 2014 Razer Blade 14 that had a touch screen. I've since electronic waste recycled that, so can't check.

I've made it two days without it happening, so I'm hoping it's resolved. As a singer, I really can't have a computer that doesn't produce or record audio, though. I'm glad I have multiple devices, or I would not have been able to have my voice lesson Sunday.

Agreed 100 percent. I could not work without my computer either. It's odd though it's an intermittent problem. Different than what happened to my device when I got it. It really sounds like a hardware issue more than software.

I can't tell you how many posts I've seen throughout the years of people lamenting the loss of their PC when they had no backup options available. Given how slowly the IT department in my company works in a normal environment, full-time remote makes things even worse. If my work-issue laptop goes belly up, I have two other options at my disposal, with a third available if it's truly desperate. If you can get by even on a $150 Chromebook, it may be well worth the investment if you're depending on your computer for your livelihood.

Dell XPS 17 Refused Replacement dell.com/community

    Hi all,

My Dell XPS 17 is from the first batch of laptops with known power issues -- the computer takes less than 130W at full load. This is well documented.

Customer support has only offered a replacement motherboard replacement on Aug 31st, which is too late for my needs. However, they refuse to ship me a replacement laptop because I am over the 30 day return limit. FY it has been 40 days.

This issue took longer than 30 days to identify and diagnose. It has led to a decrease in battery health by 5% because the battery has already been ran for 15-20 power cycles largely due to unnecessary battery drain.

These motherboard parts exist but on the second production run of Dell XPS 17's and it doesn't make sense that I can't have a replacement for the laptop.

    Has anybody experienced this issue?

Can't answer your question @denniscu , but do have one of my own (related, kinda)... not just for you, but for the XPS 17 forum crowd...

I'm going to get the XPS 17 at some point, to replace my XPS 15 (which I love). How long would you wait to order one, to let all the "new laptop" bugs work themselves out?

FWIW, I always order from Dell directly.

To answer both questions above, personally I like ordering from whoever will take the BEST care of me with warranty repairs, and in the XPS 17's case, I chose Dell directly with onsite support (4yr). They've replaced faulty displays on several XPS 15's I've had twice in the past, so I trust them.

Now seems like a fine time to buy the 17, the trackpad issue was accounted for and resolved, and I'm sure if you had a faulty trackpad, they'd likely fix it (and I'd ask for on-site). My unit has no major defects, software works fine, my 4k display has a little backlight bleed in top right corner but its not very noticeable. Seems like the devices are solid. Just wait for a good discount, 10% off or better.

I tried to order replacement rubber feet since two of mine came off, and one of them came off all over again after I reattached the two that came off the device. Dell actually can't ship the rubber feet separately, so somebody is coming tomorrow to replace the entire bottom panel of the computer. I'm going through with it, but if I had known that was the fix, I wouldn't have bothered. I just didn't want to end up setting the computer on a flat surface and discovering that it wobbled.

Goto a Starbucks and look around. Compelling enough for me.

In all seriousness, apple has just not produced anything in laptops that is better than any of their competition. Dell, Microsoft and others out perform them, have more features, better hardware and are just............ Better.

I am quite aware and it under performs greatly. Look for the video I posted about a professional video editor on moving to the book 3. He bought the pro 16 twice and it was crap both times. It's an overpriced trash can.

Did you watch that video? That guy works on major motion pictures and the apple failed him. That's enough for me to run away from them. My sons air is just as stagnant. Nothing new software wise, it's exactly the same as my 2007 Mac was.

I just telling you about the software. My son came home from university for a week on Friday and I used his Macbook yesterday and he is on the latest update. It's terrible. The software is so far behind win10 it's comical. It has not changed since my 2007 Macbook still the same stagnant dock on the bottom of the screen with basically the same icons, functionality and useage. Absolutely nothing new and modern. Add in the 16 pro which tosses the beachball everytime premire is started, with a crappy subpar keyboard and touch bar. My 500 dollar dell has a better keyboard and with a full Touchscreen compared to a hokey touchbar there is no competition.
