The 460M completely destroys the GT 550M. For gaming purposes, the G53JW is much better than the XPS 17.

Thanks man. Does the xps 17 have anything better that this model doesn't? I am thinking of just ordering it from newegg today and getting it on monday. I appreciate it.

Unfortunately the only thing higher is the 555M but it still isn't really a gaming card. G series = gaming. XPS = high end consumer multimedia notebook.

Yes. GT have always been lower end of the scale. Don't get me wrong the GT 550M is a high end card but entry level high end. Plus it uses slower DDR3 RAM vs GDDR5 for the 460M/560M.

I placed a order for the xps 17 with dell but can't cancel it. I used my debit card and have not been charged yet. If I order the g series and dell tries to charge me in a week or two when it ships but my card gets declined (since it does not allow overdrafting and I won't have enough money in my account for dell), what happens?

The XPS is GREAT for gaming - go to youtube and search "xps 15 gaming" and you'll find a bunch of vids. Their is one of Starcraft 2 and need for speed that ran awesome - unless you're a really hard core gamer the XPS is just fine and will handle whatever you throw at it. A quad core processor will help further :D

So the GPU for the asus is better than the one on the dell xps 17...how about cpu wise compared to the i7 2630qm? Not sure which laptop to choose

The G53JW also has the Clarkfield quad core i7. It all boils down to what games you want to play. 98% of games are GPU bound so the only way to increase FPS is by having a higher end GPU. Very few are CPU bound.

Again 550M will probably do high resolution but lower quality or lower resolution and higher quality but won't handle both well.

Depends on what you do with it.

I usually play WoW and my xps 14 is more than enough to handle it at 900p and semi-ultra setting.

I also have crysis 2 installed, which will not run smooth with max resolution/setting, but still playable if I lower them.

If you play games like crysis 2 and want the best experience out of them, go with the asus G series.

CPU hardly matters, there's hardly any performance difference between 740QM and 2630QM.

The GT 555M is decent enough for gaming (even more so with it's fairly good overclocking, took my GPU from 590Mhz to 740Mhz with only +2c temp rise, and GDDR3 from 900Mhz to 970 [taking the shader from 1180Mhz to 1480Mhz]).
I also have the 2630QM, and the 900p LCD.

Installed 'Bulletstorm' demo earlier, and ran it at native resolution with all detail settings at high (including 8x AA).
I can honestly say I was pretty impressed, ran very smoothly.
Obviously there are games that will cause it problems with maxed settings, but drop them down a little and it'll be smooth again.

I've literally just installed 'Dirt', so will be interesting see how it does there.

    EDIT:
'Dirt', all graphics settings completely maxed, still smooth as silk.
Anyone who says the GT 555M isn't great for gaming doesn't have a clue...

BTW, even if you get the 550m some of us are getting a 550m that is more like a 555m a little underclocked (what you then can OC to 555m speeds afterwards). See this thread:

I ordered the Asus. Seems like a better deal with a higher end GPU and true 1080P with no 3d crap. Nothing but positive reviews from Newegg on it.

A 760/970 clocked GT 555 will be 5 to 10% less powerful than a stock GTX 460... however you can oc the 460 pretty high so there is no real competition between them....

I'm still very pleased with GT 555, fullhd max settings on most games so far :)
