I've had an XPS 1710 for 3.5 years and am itching for an upgrade, but I'm doing my best to wait for the xps16 refresh. I'm started to get a bit irritated with the speed of my 160gb 5400 rpm laptop drive so I was thinking of upgrading to a SSD while I wait.

Has anybody tossed one of these into their system - I'd assume it's straightforward. Is this probably the best bang for my buck upgrade while I wait for an xps refresh? As well, any suggestions on what to pick up? It seems like Intel is the leader at the moment.

    Thanks

Intel G2 drives are indeed the safest bet, although i am not sure you'll be able to fully utilize it's abilities inside a m1710, anybody knows what SATA throughput it supports ?

Thats a good point, so if I picked up one of the G2's ( Newegg.ca - Intel X25-M Mainstream SSDSA2MH160G2R5 2.5" 160GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)) I wouldn't even be able to install it? Or at least, it would run at a reduced speed?

Waiting until December for a refresh will be tough..

you would be able to install it just fine, as for the speed, i am not really sure so i don't want to tell you. Keep in mind there's a possibility it will run at reduced speed, although comparing to an HDD it will still be lightning fast.

I had a M1710 running with an Intel Postville 80 gb SSD a couple of weeks ago. You wont be able to run the SSD at its maximum speed since the M1710 motherboard only supports SATA150, while the SSD requires SATA300 for maximum performance. However, it's still going to be a huge difference compared to the old HDD. You'll like it :)
