Hello World,
Tip #1 - M1730 is not a "Lap" top. Too hot for a human lap. It may have been tested on a Gorilla's lap - as long as the fur has been pre-treated.
There have been so many communications (useless) with dell aggravation team (I mean escalation team) and a house call. It would be easier to paste my last email to my buddy (Mr. Excuses) at Dell who should be famous.
Here goes...

For Donation...
DELL XPS M1730 Laptop (I mean desktop) or do what I do, get a piece of wood that will fit on your lap.
It came from Dell as a laptop however it will burn your lap so Dell recommended it be used as a desktop.
Feel free to contact Ronnie UID 0105955 at Dell Corp for additional reasons and excuses...
The battery is currently new and just replaced by Dell however it is again at 0% - for the first week it was at 31% charged (I keep it plugged in) but 31% was too good to be true.
If I only knew how good I had
it last week when you could have actually unplugged the unit for 1 second and the entire system would not go down.
Feel free to contact Ronnie UID 0105955 at Dell Corp for additional reasons and excuses...
The tape surrounding the monitor is unraveling and although that was to be dealt with, it wasn't.

Ronnie now recommends I send my system to what he calls "the depot". Sounds scary and serious and I am not sure I want to;
A. Have my system go through a traumatic event
B. Do without my business system for a week maybe more
C. Become a packing and shipping department for Dell Corp
D. Waste more time with this mess
E. Agree to have my 3 year on-site Next Day Warranty Ignored
F. Receive another email from Ronnie complete with reasons and excuses
G. All of the above
I am donating this unit because I think it best if someone else enjoy a relationship with Dell and their employee Ronnie
If you accept this donation, please do not contact me unless you plan to;
A. Donate a Laptop computer I can put on my lap
B. Retains a battery charge
C. The monitor tape is fully secure
D. It does not have the Dell name anywhere
E. Whoever the manufacturer is, they do not have a Ronnie employed in their "Reasons and Excuses" Department
All offers considered unless your name is Ronnie
Thanks and have a nice life. If you De-Dell yourself, your life will be nicer... Promise..

The funny part is that Ronnie is on a loop. Repeats the same things over and over, one of them being "well, it really isn't designed to be on your lap, isn't designed to be on your lap, isn't designed to be on your lap,".
"Send your business machine to our depot, business machine to our depot, business machine to our depot".
Lonnie Man - Dell's version of Rain Man.
Of which I respond....
That does not make sense. You said it should be hot and the laptop should not be used on my lap.
So what would they be doing to the unit if it is suppose to be on a desk?
Given the battery issue (which they already replaced) it needs to be plugged in all the time so I guess it really is a desktop.
And that unraveling around the monitor has been ignored in all the correspondences and the tech guy knew nothing about it.
The tech guy that came out said it would be easier to replace the monitor part then to mess with the issue at hand, but he had no instruction from Dell regarding that issue.
Besides, it is used for business and I don't know of a business that can do without a system for a week+
....
Is he accusing Dell of false advertising and or negligence? Is Lonnie just ignorant or is he the Dell Junk Yard guard dog?
This has been going on for months. It will continue until my warranty expires then - you can guess what Ronnie will say.
Go Dell!
PS. I also noticed that all my emails to Ronnie Man includes my email to him, except for the "Donation" one I posted here. I guess he didn't want that repeated in all the emails.
Go Dell!

this honestly doesn't make much sense ...
But if your donateing it ill take it
I can fix it all
BUT Please contact Team Blackhawk from Dell they are based in Texas and are all American and WILL help you
TRUST ME -
Also yeah, Dell don't sell it as a laptop. They sell it as a NOTEBOOK.
Read the manual, Safety section - It specifically mentions not using it on your lap.
Also the manual tells you how to look after your battery properly to stop it from messing up.
If you intend to use the M1730 on your lap, be prepared for a few broken bones, and a lot of burn marks =-P -
This is your business system? Rule number 1. When buying business systems, buy business systems. The XPS range are not Dells corporate range. What you were looking for was their Lattitudes & Precisions. Not only are these machines typically built with longevity in mind, the level of service you get is much much better.
You could ask for someone to come out onsite, but I suspect that they want the machine to test it. You could ask them to clarify why they want it in their depot; in fact that's the first thing I would have asked.
As others have said, this is not a notebook that you can sit on your lap. It warns against this in the safety manual. This notebook is a high performance gaming machine in reality, and they do tend to generate a bit of heat. Why anyone would want a 17" laptop actually on their lap is a little bizarre in my opinion, as it simply wouldn't be very comfortable. Also, keep in mind that using any notebook on your lap is not a good idea for any length of time. The ergonomics of your lap are not as good as those of a desk and chair. -
GUYs GUYs GUYs
you can use any computer on your laptop i used my M17 on my lap don't start hammering him ....
Still doesn't change the issues -
I use my M1730 on my lap too, but I put a cooler between my leg and the laptop to ensure I don't get burnt =-/ -
The M1730 is a desktop replacement notebook. It's not a laptop and never has been marketed as such. I guess the user didn't understand that. I'll take the M1730 off your hands since you're donating it.
