    Hello,

My XPS 1710 is being replaced with a XPS1730 under warranty.
The new laptop is getting a Duo 2.4 , Dual 8700GT Cards, and 2 gigs of ram.

I wanted to upgrade the Ram in the laptop to 4 gigs and I was curious which was compatible with the laptop. I'm going to be buying it off NCIX.com as I am in Canada. If someone could point me in the right direction of which to get that would be great. I was looking at the 2x2gigs of OCZ ddr2 800 ram and was curious if it would work in my laptop.

    Thanks

DDR2 667MHz RAM. 800MHz RAM will downclock to 667 as no Intel part supports 800MHz yet.

Yep, nearly any DDR2 so-dimm module will work...just go for the cheapest one with a lifetime warranty(most manufactures have a lifetime waranty).

Even though you are planning to buy it from NCIX, check out the ram deals thread(even though the deals are mainly for US, there is sometimes a great deal for canadian/other international counties-check the first and last couple of pages)

Also, you need a 64-bit OS to use/see all of the 4GB

JTI - you may want to call Customer Service. My M1710 was also replaced with a 1730. I had a 7950 GTX in my 1710 and they tried to send me a unit with the 8700 cards.

I argued the following points and they caved:

    1. 7950GTX has 512MB of onboard memory. Single 8700 has only 256MB and I did not plan on running the unit in SLI mode due to battery consumption and performance probs with Dell issued 8700 drivers resulting in incompatibility with some of the games I play. The current posted Vista32 driver for the 8700 found on the support.dell.com page is from 9/2007.
    2. 8700 has poor performance at native resolution of 1920x1200 whereas my 7950GTX was fine @ native resolution.
    3. 7950GTX has a 256-bit bus. 8700 only has a 128-bit bus.

Even if you had the 7900GTX you still have a valid argument for the 8700's.

Just a thought... it worked for me. I wasn't going to settle for something inferior.

If you need a 64 bit OS to optimize 4 gigs of ram would buying Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit be better than running my windows xp pro 32 bit?
I mainly use the laptop for gaming and listening to music. Like WoW, Age of conan, Old school counterstrike or COD4. Anyone able to forsee any problems if I was to buy Vista64.

Batboy: I wish I would have thought about that before. They actually already shipped my computer a few days ago, My computer did have a 7900gtx. You think it would still be worth trying to haggle with them sending me a 8800 instead?

YES. Give Customer Serv a call. Just outline the differences and the fact that it is not EQUAL to your 7900GTX card. Stick to your guns. It might take talking to a handful of people, but in the end it still is a valid argument.

    Thanks batboy,

I called customer service and explained the differences you told me, they passed me through to tech support and back again. Finally had to ask to speak to a supervisor before they would stop passing me back and forth on the phone. Suppose to get a phone call today if there going to be exchanging it for a 8800.

I didnt know the 8700s were that weak of a card. Had to look it up myself and explain it to the tech support guy. He was telling me that because it was SLI they were better heh.

Yeah they will state when running in SLI mode, etc. Like I said, just stick with the 'but i'm not going to run it in SLI mode due to the power drain. My 7950 GTX out performs this card. So, it's not equal.'

If need be, continue to ask for a supervisor if the person you are speaking to is giving you the run around. They can send a tech out to install the cards. Cheaper than ordering another system.

Will the 7950 GTX even fit into the 1730? I have the 1730 with the 8700 GT, but I have a 7950 GTX lying around. DO I have to do any mods?

It's Dell proprietary module, so I guess it should fit.
But in the 1730 he can only have the 8700M GTs or the 8800M GTX SLI.
