First impression : WOW, that thing is big.
It`s got a really good build quality, wouldn`t have expected it.
However, the GPUs run very hot for my liking, idling at 60ish, which is the max temp for my Sager...
Hmm, I`ll have to tweak it a bit and post some pics, but so far, the thing is a beast. Looking forward to trying out Crysis and UT3 on it.
    Config : 2.4 T8300, 2 gb RAM, SLI 8800M GTX,WUXGA...

    Pics to be added tomorrow.

So far, the XPS is like a rock, no screeches, nothing. It`s simply amazin, but needs tweaking and fan speed adjusting.Getting i8kfangui :D

Oh, and it`s quiet, real quiet. Wouldn`t have expected that either...

I wouldnt touch the fan controls. You really dont need to. The system does an excellent job when it comes to thermal control. The kind of temps you should be getting are as follows....

Idle: Fluctuates between 58c to 75c. As I said, fans kick in at acount 70-75c, and do an excellent job of cooling the system down to around 58c.

Under load/Gaming: The highest temps I ever recorded were around 80c. This was while playing Crysis, at almost max settings. The fans kick in and keep the temps at around 75-80c.

The above temps are normal, and you wil be fine with them.
Point ot Note - all temps above are recorded with Everest Ultimate - which has been the most accurate at giving temp readings for me!

I would striongly recommend you lift the back of the system off of the desk a little though. Just prop it up from the back with bottle tops or somet - about half an inch should do. It makes a HELL OF A DIFFERENCE with cooling! The system runs a lot nicer.

Congratz on your purchase... for some reason I thought you already had an XPS M1730 like mine lol!

One of the first things you'll notice is that the M1730 has excellent cooling specs, but putting its back on a raised platform does improve cooling even more. Mine sits on a Targus push fan base, but I found that the extra air actually causes system temps to go higher, so now the Targus stays off.

If your system is running Vista, the latest NVidia 175.19 drivers will make a big difference.

GL and enjoy your new gaming beast.

the smoke is my fav i think.. i honestly really dont like the red but im not at all a red person. the blue i think would look better if it was not maybe so much like electric blue or so plastic looking at least from the pics of it online. from the pics the white just looks a bit less like plastic so much i guess.. i still would have liked the smoke. but i think you can change just the wings if im right??

Yes, they can be changed, but replacement requires complete removal of the LCD to get to the wing plate mounting screws. My M1730 originally had blue wings, but XPS Premiere Support granted my request to swap them out for smoke gray models since the originals that came with it were scratched.

The only thing that cand get really annoying is all the lights.

Just got up and didn`t get much of a chance to do anything, will download 3dmark and install crysis and give it a run.

It may have excellent cooling, granted it has 2 8800M GTXs, but it`s idle temps are my Sager's load temps.
I`ll have to tweak it and make it run cooler and get a Zalman ASAP.
Even though I have the 3 year warranty :D

I`ll get on it after I eat, I worked some 16 h yesterday and slept like 8h.

I didn't like the blue plates because they were very "loud" visually. The gray panels look much more subdued / normal -- these match the rest of the laptop much better than the blinding blue plates.

Unfortunately the wing plate LED's don't have variable colors like the speaker / touchpad lighting effects, but they still look nice :) Here they are pictured with the gray plates:

To Eleron911: Make sure that all of your lighting effects are working. I found a burned out LED on mine when my M1730 initially arrived. Dell had to replace the entire back lid assembly just to fix it.

kinda... the area under the wing plates are white by default, and I got to see the lid with the white wings while the tech was installing the gray plates.

Without derailing this thread too much further, I don't think you can really go wrong with either one. White is a nice, neutral color, but if you like something more flashy, blue is fine with the LED's on.

Yea, all the lights work, but I want to turn some of them off, if not all, they just heat up the system.
And SLI is giving me hard time with Crysis, pisses me off.
    It`s all good :D
I`m just getting used to it, but man, is this thing ever solid. No screen wobble,no keyboard flex,no wiggle.
    Rock solid,woot!
