When I look at the pictures of the XPS M1730, I can't help but to think that it must be one of the ugliest laptops I have seen in quite a few years, and seem to be made for a 12 year old. Is it as bad IRL?

I agree as its a step back from there 1710's which were fantastic. Good solid design, not big and bulky. These new 1730's are just ugly.

Seriously-stop bashing this notebook. I have one-it looks nothing like it does on the website-it is really the most beautiful laptop i have ever seen without a doubt! The lights are awesome-and keyboard is the greatest notebook keyboard i have ever typed on!

also-not for 12 year olds-this is a serious gaming macine with the right drivers and quick mods/hotfixes. It blows games away without getting hot at all-i would say the best lappy heatsink in a while for gaming

Ok, I was just stating my opinion. I understand they had to make it the way they did due to two 8600GT's and the the Physics card.

I have seen/used this notebook at a DELL store in the mall and it is butt fugly! Sorry guys that have one but, it is huge and bulky the imagery on the cover is just dumb. And it has enough goofy lights to give a UFO or a lightbright a run for it's money. Granted it is a gaming power house and does what it is made for I just wish it was as good looking as it is functional.

And this has what to do with the subject? Couldn't they just have made it black and let the kids put whatever image they want on it using super glue? Seems like I am far from the only one having this opinion, actually, so far, no one seem to have said they actually like it. And I thought the M170 was ugly, it's a championchip contender compared to this box :D

PS The fact that I am currently using a MacBook Pro (which I will continue to use) doesnt exactly help the the 1730s case either, when compared to one of the most well designed laptops ever.

Actualy, having looked at the pictures again, I have jut about decided not to order this computer at all, as I fear people will laugh at me because of the design of this thing. I mainly want to use it for work, as I need a very powerfull computer for that, and this would do if i hadn't been for this fact.

I'll pretend that some1 didnt actually say the MBP is the best designed notebook ever (ROFL)

i guess putting pieces of plastic over vents is considered good design these days

I would think that you are confusing the MacBook Pro with the MacBook (which is the low end version and is a bit plastic indeed).

True, as long as the product doesnt look like toys for kids. As a consultant, my customers expect me to be pro, and pros dont use toys (or stuff that looks like it) no more than they show up at work in t-shirt and shorts. Even the old M170 caused a few laughters from grown ups, and that is WAY better than this one when it comes to design.

Ok, I will start off by saying "Yes" I own one and I am not a fan boy. I will however make a comment on a few things:

Looks: I am a national sales manager and I do power point presentations all the time. Looks are important to me since I always dress to impress. I ALWAYS get compliments on how my M1730 looks. I previously owned an M1710 and was used to that look. I received the M1730 and actually thought it looks ok, not great just ok. I wasn’t too impressed with it until so many people started saying it looks hip and unique, better than most boring laptops. I always get the question, is that carbon fiber?

Size: come on... It’s a desktop replacement. It has a DUAL SLI 8800m graphics card with Ageia Phys X Processor. Dual hard drive capability to run raid. It’s big because of what it can do and that’s out perform most notebooks and desktops on the market. If you don’t need this performance BUY a different laptop! I purchased mine for games and all of the intensive 3d rendering I do for work. It’s always funny to read the forums and see people write...” They are too big" I always laugh because obviously they don’t know anything about desktop replacements!

Bottom line is either you like it or you don’t. I personally look at Macs and think they all look boring! I always walk by all the Macs on display in Best Buy and check them out to see what they are all about.

Price: Well I have connections and probably would not pay 4k for this thing. I paid 2k!

8800M Dual SLI GTX 1 gig Memory

You need to go back to the MAC hole you crawled out of!!! I for one hate the MAC look.

I'm not overly fond of the 1730, but thought the 1710 looked HOT!

I agree with Jack53! The M1710 red was probably one of the best looking laptops dell has ever made.

The 1st thing I noticed between the M1710 and the M1730 was the keyboard. The new keyboard does laps on the M1710! Smoother keystrokes and the the white backlit keyboard looks phenomenal.

I knew you were going to chime in about the 1710. I couldn't agree with you more.

The M1730 is a gaming machine, not a business machine. Go with a new 1510 Vostro for a business look. Yeah the MBP looks pretty cool until you melt your legs off due to the fans never running.
