HI all,
I had this laptop (xps 9530) since November 2013 and there has always been an issue with USB devices. Flash drives and external drives seem to be fine, however, mobile devices, tablets, hubs, USB adapters constantly have issues. As soon as they are connected to any USB port (2.0 or 3.0), the plugged-in sound plays, then unplugged, and then it will connect/disconnect/reconnect randomly until it is unplugged.
I have tried the same devices in other laptops/systems running Windows XP/7/8/8.1 and all work fine. I also tried booting to Linux on the XPS and got the same issues as in windows.
I'm on A06, every time a new BIOS version comes, I install it hoping that'll fix the problem, however, to no avail.
Has anyone else had this or similar?
Thank you!!

Just wanted to follow up.
I would kindly appreciate if anyone can give it a try and see if I am the only person that is experiencing this issue.
Much appreciated!! -
Have you checked all your drivers??
-
So it seems it is just me -
Help PLEASE!!
I got a new replacement and it has the same issue as before. I have all the drivers updated and I tried everything I could, even installed bootable Linux. The same USB cord is tried on other non XPS 9530 and the cord works, I tried at least 5 different OEM cords.
I am not sure what to do and I would appreciate any help! Thank you in advance. -
I would like to kindly ask everyone in this forum that has an XPS 9530 to let me know if they are experiencing the same issue as I am. If not, please also confirm.
I am really desperate, I am on the third replacement and all had the same issue. -
The 9530 is very picky with the USB cables used. I have the symptoms you mention with several cables that work just fine on other machines. I find that the longer the cable the more the chances for it to have issues. However there are cables that work fine with the 9530.
BTW I have more issues with the 2.0 port than with the 3.0 ones -
-
I used to have this problem all the time with my Galaxy S2 and I believe Nexus 7. I haven't connected them for a while, so don't know if its still an issue. Will check once I get home.

I have no problems with my Moto X.
-
I have a 10cm Nokia cable that works always without any problem. I have one or two other cables with 30cm that also work. You need to try a few different brands until you find one that works. From my experience the smaller the cable the greater the chances of it working.
-
It is very strange. Non of my cables work.
I tried buying a powered USB hub thinking the issue might be related to voltage and that didn't work. What is the cause of this problem?
I found on youtube a video that shows that exact same problem as mine, however, it is in Dutch:
Dell XPS 15 9530 USB ports not working (Dutch) - YouTube -
I have this exact same problem on my M3800, which is essentially the same as the XPS 15. Any USB thumb drive or external hard drive works fine, but if I try to connect my iPhone to it, it randomly does the disconnect/reconnect thing. I haven't figured out exactly how to workaround it, as it just works sometimes or gets resolved by a reboot. I have tried different cables but they all seem to work randomly at times, so I can't establish a good pattern there either. And using USB2/USB3 ports doesn't really make a difference either, although I seem to have better luck with the USB2 port at times.
It is quite annoying though as it makes it hard to do iPhone backups without getting interrupted midway, thus creating corrupted backups and having to restart the process again. if anyone knows more, I would be interested. -

I connected my old Nexus S phone and had the same connect/disconnect issue. Every now and then, after physically re-plugging, it stays connected for awhile. Other times, it would constantly reconnect. Different ports didn't seem to make a difference.
I also notice the same problem with an external USB 3.0 drive (2.5" USB powered), branded "ADATA Nobility NH01." However, unlike the phone, the frequency of disconnects seems to be related to the distance between the USB port and the power connector. The USB port closest to the power connector had the lowest frequency of reconnects, low enough that it is somewhat usable. The USB port furthest from the power connector would constantly reconnect, making it completely unusable. But like I said, I didn't notice any such correlation when using my phone.
Btw, the laptop was plugged in in all scenarios -- I leave it plugged in almost all the time. And I tested the external hard drive on two XPS 15 9530's with the same results. I only tried the phone on one of them though. -
I talked to Dell and they'll send me another replacement. Hopefully, this time, the issue is not there.
I have a feeling that all XPS 9530 models have this issue.
-
Why is it that only some people experience this and some don't. I just can't believe that every replacement have this issue, I'm on my 4th replacement now.
Something doesn't make sense -
-
-
I got my fourth replacement yesterday and the same thing happens
I give up -
Hopefully this helps. I had previously reduced it quite a bit and had no idea that would be an issue with these devices. In the end, I still don't really know what is the sole cause of this issue. On my other Windows 7 laptop, I never had this issue whether on USB 3 or 2, and with reduced virtual memory settings. -

The only was around this is using a short cable for now, however, it is not always stable. -

Hi everyone,
I had the same problem with my Galaxy S5.
Continuously connects/disconnects.
Tried different usb cable, actually a short one from an old blackberry i have.
Connection now works fine. -
i got the same problem, but looks like after I enable the usb debug in bios ( A06), the problem is gone......
-
Guys, I have this problem too and I tough the origin of problem was my Moto X. I were thinking to buy a new phone, i'll call Dell and ask for another motherboard...
-
hey guys, did you figure out the problem ? I am in the same boat and I own HTC One M8. With me the problem exist even with portable harddrives (not that much though). I was thinking to create a backup drive and wipe off windows 8.1 and get windows7 but i couldn't since i couldn't make the back up image on my flash drive.
Any suggestions or shall i call dell for replacement ? -
I contacted the Dell Premium support and they will send technician on Thursday to replace MB and USB ports.
Will see if this help and post back . -

I experience the same issue, Brand new unit purchased just last week. This is unacceptable in general but on something that costs this much is downright ridiculous. Nothing works, tried multiple drivers, enabled USB debugging in the BIOS, tried different cables all with the same result. This is a hardware fault and as such I'm amazed there has been nothing from Dell regarding this issue. Just as a side note I purchased a refurb unit in October (had to return it due to three large black dots on the screen) that did not have this issue.
Edit: Spent all day trying different devices and some appear to work while my Nexus 5 just refuses to although it is fine on all other PC's Windows 7 and 8-8.1, I tried the fix from Microsoft: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/usbcoreblog...it-disconnects-and-reconnects-frequently.aspx but it did not work for me, From the comments it seems to work for some so if you haven't tried it give it a go just don't hold your breath. I tested it in Linux as well (Xubuntu) and the exact same issue is present plug device in and it endlessly disconnects/connects.
Ok this will be my final edit, Done with this laptop, If you are not going to include an ethernet port you better damn well ensure that the WiFi is reliable and let me tell you that a laptop I've had from 2009 is leaps and bound better than this junk in terms of WiFi and it boggles my mind as to how that statement is even possible. For the casual browsers looking up info on this laptop due to maybe thinking of purchasing one here's a simple answer: DO NOT BUY THIS LAPTOP.

Has anyone able to solve the issue ? I even got the motherboard replaced and even the problem persists. I am getting annoyed.
Can anyone refer to any other better alternate i.e., a laptop which is that light and has 16G of RAM with good graphics card as well. -
I have been so frustrated by this issue that I am a little bit angry to admit this, but I tried another cable with my nexus 5 today and it is working as it should with my XPS 9530.
So, as of now, the problem seems to be resolved for me...and it seems that it was a USB cable issue.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to this discussion,

I have used number of different cables (even the stock htc one m8) but the problem is still there
... now i am going to do clean install windows instead of using the recovery option. I might even try installing windows 7 and see if the issue is windows specific or what
-
That's exactly what I did, Tried a clean install of Windows 8.1 (Not a Dell Restore) then tried Linux (Xubuntu) and the same issue was present. I would suggest cutting your losses and send it back if you can or get a technician to come out and replace the M/B. I wouldn't hold my breath even if you got a technician to replace the M/B as a post on this thread stating he was on his 4th replacement does not fill me with confidence that they even know what the issue is.
I am now patiently waiting for posts on this forum regarding the 4k version which is up for sale on their site shipping 13 February if I were to order now. Hopefully they will have not only fixed this USB issue but also the coil whine that many experienced and from my experience from the two XPS 15's I've had the poor screen quality (Dead pixels, scratches on the panel behind the outer glass etc.) -
I was able to fix my Dell 9530 USB connect/disconnect problem with this combo.

I have a Dell XPS 15 and I have the same issue when I try to connect it to my Samsung S6 via USB. It keeps on connecting/disconnecting indefinitely. I have another Galaxy S3 phone which connects without any issues. All other USB devices connect successfully without issues. The only workaround I have found to get my S6 to properly connect is via a USB 2.0 Hub. This has worked for me.

Phones aren't the only issue for me. I have USB HardDisks and whenever i try to back up my data, it lose the connectivity with hard disk in 1-2 minutes. I can't copy anything to my hard-disks
...
My laptop has gone through 4 time parts replacement and it once the laptop got replaced. and now, i am back to squar eone. same issue -

Just to add another datapoint here, I have an M3800 since last April and have this problem with my laptop when trying to connect a Nexus 7, Nexus 5, or my current Note 4. I have tried multiple cables and many many different driver versions, nothing has worked so far

Just got a refurbished unit to replace my l521x. Go to plug in my HTC M7 so I can push a another ROM to it, and this

Hello all,
I started this topic at the start of this year. Dell is refusing the acknowledge this issue. I had my laptop replaced, motherboard replaced, daughter-board; basically all components replaced. Same issue.
I sent the laptop to a professional computer repair shop, paid out of my OWN money although I am still under warranty to see if I am crazy or the issue is really me. Dell says the issue is with me. The professional confirmed that it is a laptop design flaw.
If you use a USB connections, DO NOT BUY THIS LAPTOP...
Hours and hours and hours lost of my life talking to Dell; no use.
I wish I got a MacBookx509 likes this. -
I have a couple of cables where this issue does not occur. Any other cable besides those two will have the constant disconnect/reconnect issue.

I TOTALLY AGREE - DO NOT BUY THIS LAPTOP!
Great laptop, but I won't use it to update firmware on iPad, iPhone, or Samsung phones. Anything related to USB needing a stable connection just sucks.
I can get a semi-stable connection using ORIGINAL Apple and Samsung cables using the RIGHT-SIDE USB slots, but I still won't risk updating firmware on tablets or phones where a lost USB connection can BRICK your device.Last edited: Jul 31, 2015 -
I am surprised that they didn't acknowledge the problem. I have got this laptop replaced 3 times. The issue still exist but I have kind a narrowed it down to the root cause which is "NViDia" drivers.
You should try this
* Request Dell to send you installation CD or USB stick which is vanilla windows and has no drivers pre-installed on it
* Install those drivers that you absolutely need i.e., sound, chipset, synaptic touchpad etc. BUT DON'T INSTALL NVIDIA Driver
* Once all done, Now its time to install NVIDIA driver. Follow this guide to do so http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/327414-nvidia-drivers-avoid-problems.html
For last 2-3 months, I have been having pretty consistent connection but again, I am using a an old cable (so slower charge) plus the steps i followed above.
Moreover, I am trying to sell it... The irony is that i bought this laptop after selling MacBook Pro

This could possibly be related to the Intel USB chipset (or maybe nvidia drivers as mentioned - haven't investigated that). I have the same problem on my 2015 Razer Blade 14" that I got in early July - same platform as the M3800 but a higher wattage CPU and more powerful (still) nvidia card.
