After upgrading this week to the latest Intel HD 530 graphic drivers for my XPS 9550, got constant BSOD all referencing VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE.
I rolled back the driver and all good again. I would recommend people avoid the latest drivers.

Is this the driver you have been having issues with: 21.20.16.4590 ?
I had that version dated 2017 January and having some crashes when entering screen saver. Couldn't find source of problem.
I see on Dell's website same version but with 4 April 2017 date (that could be a minor update or just intel's date)...
Rolled back to 21.20.16.4542 from October 2016 -
4624 beta is working fine. 4627 from Intel's site is not.
-
Yes this seems to be a recent update

Intel HD Graphics 530/P530 Driver
Fixes:
- Not Applicable
Enhancements:
- Improved Intel CUI control
- Improved stability with monitors
- Enhanced D3D stability
Version 21.20.16.4590, A09
Release date 04 Apr 2017
Last Updated 04 Apr 2017
I've got the .4531_A08 installed, I think since BIOS 1.2.18 or whichever fixed the flicker with it (before I rolled back to .4331)
Dell has a long history of effups with iGPU drivers on XPS 15. -
Same problem for me BSOD "VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE", rollback to A08
Shame on you Dell -
Yes, it was the 4590 drivers that caused the issue. I'm back on 4531 - all good again.

I can confirm strange behaviours with the 4590, rolling back to 4531

How do we prevent the update from installing itself again? Windows just updated the driver again after I rolled it back.

I've noticed that drivers from series 21.20.xx (Mainly for Kaby Lake graphics) do not work well with XPS 9550, there are many gfx driver crashes or the screen is very dark after resuming from hibernate. I'm using the 20.19.xx series, which is more stable. The latest version is here: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26623. It must be installed manually from the device manager pointing to the "Graphics" folder because the driver is not "certified" for 9550 (but it is signed, by Intel). You can also reinstall it afterwards by using setup.exe. BTW: there is another variant of this 4624 driver on station-drivers.com but this does not include Skylake graphics in the inf file so it will not work.

Those having issues with the new drivers may want to give DDU a go at removing everything and allowing you to install the new driver instead of windows taking over and installing what it wants before you update.
It fixed the bad flicker the latest HD630 driver had for me.pressing likes this. -

Okay I need to desperately figure out a way to prevent this update from being applied. Windows keeps updating the driver to 4590 and it's causing havoc and crashing constantly. Any ideas how I can prevent the update?
-
It disables Windows driver installer when you tell it to clean the Intel or nvidia drivers.

I noticed my 9550 detected there was an update for the video drivers and was ready to download, but luckily I saw this thread and immediately disabled the automatic driver updates to stop it from downloading and installing.
I plan on upgrading to the Creators Update tomorrow, or within the next few days. Does anyone know if this upgrade will go ahead and update the drivers anyway?
Also, for those of you that have had issues with the 4590 driver, do you also have Dell PremierColor installed? I came across this thread, which sounds like it could be similar. I thought it was interesting his issues started recently, about when the driver was released, although he didn't mention any BSOD issues. -
Did the same, backed out of 4590 driver because i was getting TDR error message and then a core dump, BSOD windows 10 style
-
I, too, just recently was getting flickering and blue-screens with TDR Failure, so I did the rollback of the Intel driver. (BTW, updating the Nvidia driver didn't help.) The rollback put a very old driver on my system. :-/ I had to go back to the Dell site and look for older versions to find 4531. Kind of annoying.
The flickering screen and "TDR Failure" with igdkmd64.sys (the symptoms I had) all pointed to a video driver problem, from doing Google searches, and I just wanted an understanding of what was going on before I started uninstalling things.
By the way, I have *NOT* received the latest Windows 10 "Creator's Update". Neither of my machines has, actually. Am I going to have to go through this again? At least I'll have the 4531 downloaded and I know what to do._sem_ likes this. -
My Dell Precision 5510 (Identical twin to XPS 15) became completely unusable after the driver update, pathetic that Dell let it through
-
Is anyone else not having issues with the 4590 driver, or is it just me? I mentioned that I disabled the automatic driver update a few posts ago, but it turns out that I wasn't quick enough and it installed anyway. So apparently I've been using this driver for the past couple weeks and didn't realize it. I'm curious if the issues might be caused some hardware or software conflict.

Event viewer - "Display driver igfx stopped responding and has successfully recovered."
Used DDU to clean out and reinstalled 4531 which solved issue. But as others report updates keep putting 4590 back on.
Gonzo, do you mean that going forward a complete DDU clean out should stop any auto updates or do I need to go the group policy route to disable? -

I managed to minimise the bsod by simply waiting for the system to stabilise after a system restart / wake up from sleep. I noticed that if I move the mouse during this time, it will bsod. Keyboard strokes seems ok during this time.
I decided to stay with the latest intel drivers due to improved 4K support especially on my scenario where the attached external monitor is HD but my 9550 is 4K -
I'm using the older 4531 driver with 4K 9550 an external QHD on WD15, have had no BSOD, just flicker before BIOS 1.2.18, scaling is mostly reasonable except a few stupid programs, like Adobe Acrobat for instance. -
1. Installed the driver I want
2. Windows reinstalled the own driver after some time
3. I've gone to Device Manager and rollbacked the driver (to the version I've wanted) plus I've checked "Previous driver was more reliable" option
Till now Windows has not changed the driver.GoNz0 likes this. -

My lappy: i5-6300hq, M$ automatically installed drivers and it appeared screen flicker everytime I lock or turn off display. I only uninstalled Dell Premier Color Software.
It is OK. -
It's truth, if i install dell premier color software. I lock computer, turn off display. Flicker appear after turning on display. Bsod appears. -
New drivers at Station-Drivers (4639). No crash yet but I'll wait for several days to see if they are at least as stable as 4549 which I used without problems. With almost every 46xx release I've had bad experiences until now.
LE: Dell posted 4627 but I experienced instability when I used it, I downloaded it a month ago from Intel's site.
And again 4639 seems fine, maybe the first 21.20.xx.xx driver that is stable enough for me (until now...)Last edited: Apr 28, 2017 -
Hi everyone
As this is my first post here I thought I'd try to make it a useful one and share my success in taming this laptop and its drivers.
I have had the XPS 9550 for a year now and for months suffered from random BSODs at startup. I have made two hardware mods: replaced the 32GB SSD cache with a Samsung 960 Evo in AHCI mode as C: drive, and replaced the WiFi card with an Intel 8260.
After much experimenting with the drivers I reinstalled the latest version of Windows 10 and noted that it installed drivers for everything. The BSODs kept coming so I adopted a new approach. I loaded all the latest drivers from the Dell web site onto the Windows boot USB stick and installed Windows again, but this time declined to connect to the internet. When Windows had finished installing (it only took five minutes!) I installed all the Dell drivers in the recommended order. I then added this key to the registry to prevent Windows from updating any hardware drivers:
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate [ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate = 1].
Finally I connected to the internet and allowed Windows to apply its updates. The laptop has been rock solid ever since.
FYI my Intel HD 530 driver version is 4664.

No, WindowsUpdate is the key and ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate is the 32-bit DWord with a value of 1.
