Hi guys,
So I'm afraid that I fried the motherboard last week. I had the laptop (sleep mode) in my backpack during heavy rain and as soon as I connected my laptop to DC power everything went black. I've dried it out (although I didn't see any signs of water invasion) for a week but even so not a single LED lights up, let alone the screen. Did I kill it? Can I fix it by replacing (just) the motherboard? Can the screen be damaged too?

Call support. Your laptop is still new enough that it should be under warranty.
Even if your damage isn't covered by warranty, you might get a friendly support rep. Or a discounted rate for repair.
You could try to replace the motherboard yourself. But the problem. With that is that there is no guarantee that it will solve your problem. There might be additional damage to the display, keyboard, water in ribbon cable connectors, etc. For a laptop this new, trying to repair it yourself by just buying the most-likely-to-help parts can be a very deep and expensive rabbit bole to go down.

open it up, check for water then once you have made it look like it never got wet call Dell and get a mobo swap under warranty.

If something exploded that might be hard to do-- but go in with a cue-tip and some rubbing alcohol and do your best

If something did explode you would still get away with it so long as it has no visible water damage, this would mean removing the motherboard as I have caught out several Toshiba customers trying to pull a fast one as we simply cannot replace a board with obvious water damage as it isn't covered. OTOH customers I had built up a friendship with would get out the q-tips & compressed air and help me clean up the mess so I could go ahead and swap the board
Engineers get really pissed if you take the piss as they spend longer on the phone to the office/support reporting the damage and STILL have to put the damn thing back together before leaving so they would rather do a quick swap and get gone, Dell engineers work on a fixed fee in the UK so assuming it is the same in most countries swap and go would be the 1st option
