XPS 9560 - Looking for a USB-C hub which will not cause the fans to spin

I have an XPS 9560, I7 1080p full battery variant, and I love how quiet it can be unless under load, which helps a lot when I work or record music.
But two USB ports are few and had no luck finding a usb 3.0 hub which could power an external hard drive.

So I went for a usb-C hub. It works fine, but pretty much as soon as I plug it in, the fans will start spinning and never stop until I unplug it. When I unplug it, This happens even with no devices connected to the hub, the computer is running no applications beyond Win 10, and throttlestop shows very low temperatures (38C).

I was wondering if anybody could point me to a usb-c hub, perhaps on amazon, which you have used and know not to cause this problem. At least not when using low power usb dongles such as controllers wifi and such.

 

My experience is that connecting usb sticks or HDDs to my 9560 laptop via a dongle when when it's a usb-c dongle, it has always given me problems, getting the HDDs to work properly.
The only way I managed to get around the bug, is to connect the usb sticks or HDDs, directly to the usb ports on the laptop, then have my mouse and separate keyboard, plugged to the dongle.

As for what dongle to use, I just use the official usb-c dell mini dock, which doesn't make any noise when plugged in, but also comes with a very limited amount of usb ports. So if anybody can recommend a noiseless usb-c dongle which has more usb ports, I am all ears.

In my case, the usb-c hub is capable of powering a 4tb portable hard disk with performance quite similar to the usb ports on the laptop, so 120-130MB/s best case scenario.
It will not power my external SSD, but I am blaming the external enclosure for that, I think it requires considerably more power than it should given in principle the 4tb HHD should consume way more than an SSD, but anyway...

But the hub triggers the fans immediately.
Actually, I found out that a similar problem occurred in 2016 with the xps 9550 and Dell solved it with a bios update.

By the way, I hear that some users managed to improve the chance that external drives are recognized by hubs and docks via usb-c, by lowering power for the wifi card, or putting the laptop in airport mode. Which seems to point to some power management problem.

Anyway, I am waiting to hear from Dell technicians, I hope they can suggest something useful.

 

Check if the fan spin is due to increased PCH temperature using HWinfo64

 

I just put thermal pads 3 x 1.5mm between the PCH and case bottom. That dropped PCH temps a few degrees and stops fans when idle or internet surfing with a few accessories connected.

I don't have any USB hubs but the PCH starts the fans at very low temps so this might help you.
