The palmrest on my XPS15 has been changed...after the original one developed a stain on the left side...now the new one is almost perfect, however the right touchpad button seems to be somewhat misaligned...its a bit higher on one side...(its only feelable if you sweep your finger on it...

Is there any way to realign the button or do they have to change the complete palmrest again?

Mine is the same - very slightly higher right button, at the centre edge next to the left one. Happened to me after my palm rest was swapped, too.

The reason my palm rest was changed was for a problem with the right touchpad button. Dell said the palm rest + touchpad assembly is a single unit, so swapped the lot. I think (from memory) that the touchpad assembly was plastic-welded on to the inside of the palm rest, giving no way to get to it to make any changes. Might be worth a look if you feel like taking it apart, though!

I decided that i'm not bothered. It's annoying that it's not quite right but I don't fancy getting a service guy back (and having to move the stickers again!)

So there is no way to realign the buttons?

There is a fix for it:

    You need the following:
    1. a credit card (or any other card which is credit card size)
    2. a bright light source
    3. some tweezers

you need to pry out the button with the credit card...use the slot between the button and some but not much force because the innards of the button are quite delicate. After the button is out, use the tweezers to pull the inner (smaller) metal hinge out.
From now its only putting it together: put the small metal hinge flat on the inner layer of the button (there are 2 small bearings in the middle of the button, the hinge needs to be pushed into these bearings) Now align the larger hinge (still attached to the button) to the upper 2 bearings of the socket and if they are secured in the bearing push the whole button into the socket until it clicks.

It should now be much better aligned to the other button, but on my L502 still has some extremely small misalignment, which is hardly noticeable even by touching...I only notice it because the original palmrest had no difference between the 2 buttons at all. (but had a discoloring after 1 week)

Excellent. And - brave man! Don't think i'll be doing that to mine right now...

Did you just start attacking it with a credit card, or find a guide somewhere?

Just pulled it out, without a guide. I'm a IT guy, and use computers since 1990 so...I was brave enough...

Yeah, me too. Still an expensive laptop to have a missing trackpad button though, or find that there are parts that sit in place and can only go in from underneath :) Well done on the fix!
