I have my XPS L502x for about 6 months now. Since then it's the first time I try to burn DVD discs and I keep getting burn errors in the middle of burning process. 4 DVD-rs have been wasted up to now.

    - I tried to burn a video disc using convertxtodvd
    - I tried burning the same compilation as a data disc using CDBurnerXP Pro
    - I ripped a store bought DVD movie as ISO by using CDBurnerXP Pro and then tried to burn that very same iso with the very same software

    Always getting burn errors.

These are two reliable software I have been using for years...

The burner is: PLDS DVDRWBD DS-6E2SH

In the system devices menu the device seems to be functioning correctly.

    What should I do?

Try different media? I had a DVD burner years back that refused to cleanly burn memorex, but Sonys worked great.

After the Philips DVD-rs, I tried burning Verbatim CD-rs with 2 different software, they failed too.

Sounds like a hardware problem, I'd try getting dell to replace your drive and maybe all the discs you wasted in their busted burner.

Have you looked up for a new firmware update on the Dell website? I had one, and after install it, I noticed that my DVD doesn't make "weird" sound anymore.

    It worth a try.
